University Survey (not Oberin news)

I received an email about a survey that wants MMO players to participate. I get emails about Oberin all the time wanting one thing or another but this one really peaked my interest. So I'm making a news post about it.

I am doing undergraduate research at Eastern Kentucky University with Dr. Dan Florell. We are looking for a sample for our research. We were wondering if we could use members of your website as subjects. This research will be completely anonymous. They will be just sharing their opinions about various aspects of MMORPGs.

I did the survey and I am interested to see what the results will be.

Here is the link for the survey, it takes about 20 minutes or maybe a little longer. It's not Oberin related and it's completely anonymous.

Character Deletion Delay Reduced

To make it easier for everyone to try out new classes before making a final choice, and in anticipation of what's to come, we decided to reduce the delay between creating a character and deleting that character from 3 days to one day (24 hours).

In order to delete one of your characters, you have to select "Request Character Deletion" in the "Management" menu of the Character Creator. If your character is more than 24 hours old, you should be able to delete it. If you encounter any problem, feel free to call a Game Master in game or to open a topic in the Support forum.

Please remember that you are only allowed to have 2 characters per account, and that it is not possible to recover a deleted character.

Great Blue Moon Festival

Now that the Blue Moon Festival is over I would like to thank you all for being very polite the entire time. I hope everyone had fun, we were a little short handed this time around but I think we involved a good lot of you in games and auctions. It was fun for me and I'm sure for the other GM's as well.

Thanks :)

... And forth!

Once again we are moving the server, hopefully for the last time. :)

As of today the server is back to Jinker's old G4, with a shiny brand new router which should work as intended. We estimate a downtime of about 20-30 minutes from the moment this is posted.

It may a while for the DNS to update properly, so the server status image in the corner might not be accurate the first few hours. Also, you may have to type "obi.mine.nu" in the server field to be able to connect.

Could it be the true end of lag? Fingers crossed! ;)

Oberin Server Info

I am getting a lot of questions about the server so I figured I would post here so you can all know what's going on. I did post in the forums but not everyone looks there.

The server is back on Glenn's as everyone knows, but many don't know why. I was running the server on my G4 for almost a week. Each day there were problems however, not with the server application or the G4, but my router. After doing some research it seems my router doesn't like a lot of traffic. This is actually what the Knowledgebase for D-Link said:

Router Locks up
The following are possibilities why you router is locking up:

• A large amount of traffic may lock the router up.

This really kills me... The primary function of a router is to handle traffic so how can you sell one that doesn't. Grrrrr!! I updated the firmware and did everything else they suggested but it made it worse. So I decided to move back to Glenn's until I could get a new router. Which is what I am doing. The server will be back on my G4 and with the new router shouldn't have any problems at all. I hope *knocks on wood*

That's the story. I hope you all hang in there until I can move the server back.

Thanks,
Jinker

Server Moving 8-09-2007

That's it, we're moving!

As of today, the server is Jinker's old G4, in Atlanta. This should reduce the lag and the connection loss by a lot, and I mean a lot. :)

Your characters will not be lost in the moving, you don't have to worry about that. On the other hand, in order to be able to play on our shiny new server, you will have to download a new client.

We took the opportunity to have a mini update, you can check the Development forum for all the news it.

Let's hope the lag monster is gone for good now!

NOTE: If you can't connect, try putting "obi.mine.nu" in the "Server" field. It takes a while for the DNS to update so you might have to use it for a few hours.

Today comes with a new update for Oberin! To make sure your client is up to date and you can play again, follow these easy steps :

1. Back up your "Oberin Logs" folder located inside your Oberin folder. It contains conversations logs you might want to save for the future.
2. Delete your Oberin folder, you won't need it anymore.
3. Click on the "Downloads" link to the left and get the latest version of Oberin.
4. Copy the newly downloaded client to your hard drive.
5. Replace the "Oberin Logs" folder with the ony you backed up on step 1.
6. You are ready to play!

As always, you can check the Development forum for notes on this update.

See you in Oberin!

Attention Guilds — Emblems

If your guild has an emblem and wants it added, email it to me by this Friday to get them included in the game. I have added many from the emblem page so there are only a few missing. I want to let you know so you can get them to me. And if you don't we can add them in a later update.

Read more for image formats and example.

Old Accounts and Counselors

Now that the site is running well I have some thing to do. First, it's spring cleaning time. I'm going to remove all character accounts that have not been active in the last year. So if you have a character you want to keep but haven't logged in to Oberin for a year, you had better login soon.

Next, I am looking for a group of counselors to maybe become GM's. By group, I want to try for 5 to 10 new counselors and go from there. If you would like to have a counselor character you shouldn't tell other players about your intentions since your player character identity is a secret. Send me an email or a PM telling me why you want to be a counselor. I will post them for the other GM's and we will start picking people sometime in the near future. Do not call a GM asking about your application or that will will earn you negative marks. Also, I like all counselors to be over 18, but if there is a mature 16 we would consider it.

Thanks!

Site ready... finally...

Sorry for the dismal site as of late. We moved hosts and the database wasn't backed up properly, as a result we will have to start over. :(

You will have to register again and start a new forum. Sorry about this... I tried to get the thing back in working order like it was, and with a great deal of help from Zee (much appreciated indeed) it just wasn't working out. So I decided to start over. Zee does have a read only version of the old forums and I will see if I can get the database and host it at Oberin.com.

One thing I was able to salvage were the screenshots, albeit without the comments.

Thanks for your patience,

Jinker
