General - Donations for a new server

Post subject: Donations for a new server
Hello Oberinites,

As I talked to Stefan this morning we both agree that tough times call for tough measures. So we will be opening up a t-shirt store and accept donations to get a new server and help with the costs that goes into running Oberin. Not forever, but just for a few months or until I can offset the cost of a new server. I'm planning on buying the server as soon as I get my new credit card. New credit card you ask? Yes, someone was using my card to rack up charges on my account so I had to cancel that card and request a new one and it hasn't arrived yet. :\ I hope to order the server as soon as I get my new card, which they said would arrive at the end of the week. This week.

I want to make this clear. None of the money collected will be for my personal use, 100% will go towards Oberin.

So how does this all work?

I opened up a t-shirt and merchandise store this morning using ShirtCity.com and I made a few basic designs with more to follow. How this works is ShirtCity handles the printing and shipping, they charge a set amount for the item and printing then allow the client to set the profit amount. For example, a t-shirts is priced at $18, they sell for $22 so the $4 is sent to my account and I receive a check by mail at the end of each fiscal quarter.

There is also a link to AlertPay® if you want to make a donation. The donations are preset at $5 and you need a credit card to make a donation. I was going to use PayPal but they only allow 5 transfer per year before I would need to sign up for a business account and I don't comfortable with PayPal having access to my bank account nor do I want to open a separate bank account.

Go here to make a donation or to purchase an Oberin t-shirt.

Thank you.

I received this email and I don't know who sent it so I will answer it here.

Hi, Jinker.

I would like to get some clarification from you, if I may, regarding
the funds for the replacement Oberin server:

1. You are going be receiving a credit card shortly. Once you have
it, you will use it to purchase a used Mac to host Oberin in short
order. This means you will end up with either a balance on your
credit card account plus interest for however long that balance
remains, or a hole in your personal finance the size of that used
Mac. Which will it be?

2. You are then going to use the proceeds and donations to either pay
off the balance + interest or fill the said hole over time, right?

3. Would you please outline to the community the approximate specs and
cost for the machine you have in mind, and then the actual specs and
cost once you have it in hand?

4. As the proceeds and donations come in over time, will you report
back on how much progress we are making as a community on a regular
basis?

Thanks!

1&2. It will be the latter, it will put a hole in my finances and the donation money will fill that hole. But once the hole is filled, the donations will stop. No interest charges at all, and if there were I would not use donation money to pay it off.

3. The specs for the Mac is a G5 1.6 Ghz, 2 GB RAM and it's $499. Once I have enough to cover the cost of the server, the donations will be closed. If there is any excess money left over it will go towards my internet Cable bill.

4. I will indeed. And like I said above the donations will end, it's not a forever type of thing.

I hope that helps Smile

Got my donation done quickly last night and put in my order for a t-shirt and coffee mug right away! Because I AM afraid that the merchandise will dry up...gosh, I wish it would not....

I am wondering if there is any way the store will be left open? I have a feeling we are going to hit Jinker's $499 goal pretty quickly. It would only take 49 of us to donate, then buy one or two things and he'd be at his required total.

Maybe this idea can be pondered. Smile If not, I have to go back to the store! Quickly!

Hey everyone, just to let you know, you can do more than one donation through the straight donation part of the site, just like buying more than one item from the store (asked this last night to Jinks).

Also, here is an idea to keep the store open, after all has been donated for the computer, jinks said that he would put the remaining money towards his internet bill. Why not let the store stay open and all proceeds go to the internet bill? Jinks can lower the profit rate if he feels to much money will be "made". Or, there could be a fund for the next time the computer fails or needs fixed. That way Jinks doesn't have to pay out of his own pocket all the time for repairs and we can still buy the Obie merchandise.

I think store idea fine. If people want to just donate, they can do so without having to buy anything. And for those that would like merchandise, they can buy an item and know some of the profit will go towards a new server.

Jinker, leave the store open. You've already given those among us who wish to donate directly a way to do that, and now you've given those of us who want a tangible piece of Oberin merchandise a way to get that, too.
And, I don't want to see you shut down the sites as soon as enough funds are in hand for you to purchase a minimal replacement for the dead server.
I, for one, would like to see you leave it open at least until you have enough to also build in some enhanced reliability, possibly through redundancy.

We love you, man.

I'm with Synnove on this. I see no reason to limit the ways that a person can donate. For those who like chochskies the store is great. If someone would rather give $5 than pay $30 for a shirt or coffee mug they can do that to.

One more for keeping the store.

This is a fantastic idea, keep it open! It could help fund new servers, the shirts pay for the selves, it would make the game go faster, and those who love Oberin, which is everyone, would be able to have it tangible piece. I think you would get ten times more cries of complaint if you closed it, than if you left it open.

Well I already made my statement before jinks wrote his so we already know my idea ( I hope). So, I'll just say this, though most people like to please everyone as much as you can, in the end you can't live your life or make ideas off the few you can't please (my motto "You can't please everyone").

I see there is an overwhelming positive response to the store. My only complaint is that I wish you had different levels of straight donations, 5,10, 15 & 20 for example. I had every intention to just donate 20 but after the first 5 I then have to reload my account and wait for it to happen before I can donate again and I'm just to lazy about that. I sill will probably buy a mug or bear but would have like to just had given $20.

Keep the store! Buy a mug now, a bear later.

Keep it open I say! You can just keep the shop open and make different donation amounts, I want a shirt (maybe a man-thong too... '>>) but I need to pay my insurance first. I say keep it and all the money can go to upgrades, server space, bandwidth, cable (lol), and more! Plus we are finally happy to be able to help keep this great game running! For years its been free and we have been glad to play it free, but now that you actually need the money, take it for Luskin's sake and use it to make Oberin that much better! Plus, you can always add new designs to the shirts and stuff, maybe even make it so we can have our character's picture on it with "Oberin" above it and maybe our catch-phrase on the back or something? I would totally pay like $45 or more for something like that, and even wear it to school (regardless of the teachers...). Also, make a more "dynamic" way of paying so that we can choose our own amounts (min of $5 of course). Cause when I pay off my insurance I can just take a good $30 or so and maybe buy a shirt or just donate it so that you get a bigger profit that way.

Another idea: Get some "famous" quotes put on some shirts. e.g. Soon™

Yeah, back in 2001, but since then we got a new management and the game is still a beta, not updated frequently because the 2 developpers both have jobs. The last update is over a year old.

If updates were coming as fast as when Stefan and Jinker updated the status of the game from closed to open beta (sometimes it was 3 updates a week, not huge ones but still small ones were fun to have), maybe I would consider paying for Oberin, but the problem with monthly payment is simple to me. If you play for a year at 5$ a month, it is 60 $. If you play 2 years, 120$. 3 years? 180$. 8 years? 480$. That is a lot for 1 game you never get to own.

But I would rather pay 70$ as a one time fee to download the game and have no monthly fee then paying for each month of gameplay. They could even include a higher price for those who would want to have the server application, so we could have a multitude of worlds, but that is just me dreaming.

My dearest friend,

I would quite willingly pay something towards the game - the problem is, there are many very young players around who would have to apply to their parents, with the results you can probably imagine... so here we have a situation where the younger ones are in the game because it's free - what do we do, considering that they represent the vast majority? In an ideal world, that portion of Oberin lovers who are financially independent could undertake to help with the expenses of running the game but... well, it's very much up to our game masters Smile

Free donations? Keeping the shop open? A combination of both?

Where there's a will there is a way, they teach us Smile

If Stefan would leave job and work only as Oberin developer, maybe.

But really, I cant sleep tonight, so let me think over this a bit. Maybe it will make me sleepy

1) I would love to know on which computers people actually play... I tried to bring some people to WoW for bit of fun (not moving from Obie) in past and many times it ended on: "My Mac is too old." So is Oberin relic of past for users with slow Macs or is majority of people (lets say over 50%) on fast new Macs? I think it would interesting poll. Why Im asking for this - if people dont have money for new Mac (and for example Mac mini is easy to buy even for a student if they are willing to work a bit...), they probably dont have money for paying fee for game...

2) Take current donations... Lots of people cant even pay. Like I dont have credit card for paying over net... I dont have paypal or anything like that. For people like me it would be game over.

3) Go play WoW if you want to pay every month for a game. - Nice sentence I found in this topic. Lots of people probably still doesnt know there are thousands of free WoW servers. Some pretty shitty, some good. Its easy to play WoW for free, just have patience and find good free server. There are more free Mac MMORPGs... Planeshift, Shadowbane, Minions of Mirth... And if we would have to pay for Oberin, there are hundreds of MMORPGs you can pay for... I always wanted to try Ragnarok and some others. But Im simply not willing to pay monthly (more than once) for play.

______

Anyway paying for Obie... Obie is pretty old game with slow development and small community. No offense, its free game, its somehow good game (considering community, apart from abusing even game system and apart from all the OCC people role playing) and bosses do what they can. It still can have future (I see it in adding more and more options for players which would make game more and more interesting even although graphic, sounds and music are as are).

But paying for it? Kind of joke. I believe it would quickly end Oberin existence. Of course if you wouldnt hire team of devs and do all kind of wild upgrades. There is already big competition from other free MMORPGs (huge considering the amount of free PC MMORPGs) and if Oberin would step on field of pay to play games... Uh huh. Maybe few hardcore oberians would stay *nods*. Others would stop because they would not be able to pay, they wouldnt be willing to pay or they would move to other payed game.

You can say Jinker must pay for server and stuff... But thats the same with thousands of free game servers all over the world and its not a reason for making players pay (or there wouldnt be a single free online game). However donations and especially store are something different.

This whole is just a hypothetical respond to hypothetical answer of course. Im bit sleepy, hopefully my babbling will make some sence. And I meant no offense, Im here for some years myself and yes its somehow good game.

*murmurs* Remove bad training and change graphic and sounds and music to Baldurs Gate II style and I will pay, yeah...

I think you ought to just keep the store and donation area for good so that we can help you pay your cable or buy server upgrades, bandwidth, memory, etc. Or even another server for backups, I would like to be able to donate at least something to you guys because I've been on Oberin for...a little over two years and have tried asking to help and each time you declined saying, "Just playing the game is the best help you can give." but I'm not satisfied with only playing the game, since it IS a free game, it's nice to donate and know that it is actually keeping a game that I highly enjoy up and running for other people to experience as well. So PLEASE don't pull the plug on being able to help you guys out financially. If anything keep a stockpile for later, or like I said earlier, save up for memory upgrades, etc.

I was wondering, and I thought I would ask because I don't see the harm in it.

How much does it cost to keep the server up and running all month long? I am talking about internet wise and all that. I wonder because I hear people talking about band with, I know a little about how that works, but I thought it was just with sites.

My point in asking is that after the cost of running Oberin all year is figured, Jinks can adjust the donations and store pricings so that he roughly gets that amount. Or at least the store.

I can understand the opinion on the donations not wanted, jinks does not feel we should pay for it, and does not want us to. We should respect that. But, as for the store, most of us would want it to remain open so that we could get some oberin merchandise every now and then. Keeping at least that open could be a good compromise. The Pricings can be adjusted so that a very little amount is taken and it could either be put aside for emergency usage, or put into the running costs.

Post subject:
Yay! My obie mugs arrived today! Gaper-coffee.

Now... following Lenard's question, I have a delicate comment. Before I make it, JINKS, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a bad thing (I'm not even Val).

Obie, as it is now, is closer to a hobby than a job. GMs volunteer, and players have fun. When things go in a way players don't like, they protest and Jinker replies "I'm god and this is not Burger King". From the moment on Jinker would start accepting money on a regular basis, this wouldn't be possible anymore. He would be put into the situation where the players could reply "I pay for it, I want". We are all very nice and none of us would say that, of course...

My point is: on the day we start paying for Obie, the game would have to become a job for the GMs. And in that case, I am very sorry, but to buy a mug wouldn't be enough to pay for their salary. It would imply to rethink the whole goals of Obie and ways to make it fair to everyone.

For Obie, as it is now, I prefer to have a God Jinker having fun with what he's doing, than an under-paid developer. Donations for emergencies, yes. Donations for a specific thing that must be bought for the game to survive, yes. But I understand how to accept constant donations may put Jinker in a hard situation.

"It's not about Jinker, it's about us, the community". Very well and very true. We all wanted to play on a stable server, we could help with that. Then what would be the next project for this community? We can still discuss it, we can still decide to offer ourselves a gift that the gms can use to make the game better. Just not make it regular. I don't see many people willing to buy Obie thongs forever. I think what made this fund raising so successful was motivation! We all wanted to play again - would we still want to spend money if we still can play? Or would this donation thing go naturally lower and lower, meaning that in a month only one t-***** was sold?

Either this, or we can hire Clem as a financial adviser. I am pretty sure she would have a plan to make this all possible. Wink
