This idea is for those who do not (yet) belong to a guild or chose not to be. One could declare their home town. Someone would do this for a few reasons. Being in your hometown would allow you a discount on goods and services while in your home. (Everyone loves the locals, right?) There could be a few quests just for townies. They could be different for each town. Some people might actually want to declare where they chose they're from for Role Playing purposes. Each town could have it's own crest or symbol that would in some form appear in the title window. It's nice to be from somewhere.

One does not have to declare anything. Declaring (or setting) your hometown could be a quest in and of itself. Untagging could be done by a GM or just by doing a different town's declaration quest.

I have played a game with a faction system similar to what you are suggesting. It was more PvP based, though.

Many people already roleplay loyalties and hometowns. If something like this were implemented, I'd want a penalty for changing loyalties once they are declared. I have mixed feelings on whether factions would be a good direction for Oberin, though.

This makes me think of another recent idea thread where someone suggested trying to find a way for non-guild members to have access to extra chests. Perhaps if someone declared a hometown they'd be able to have an extra chest there, for a cost, of course. (My first thought would be at the bank, but w/ the small bank that Marali has that probably wouldn't be an option.)

Hehe, all 3 of my characters declared home towns for role playing purposes long ago. I simply use the town they were "born" in (ie-came down the ladder into).

So, one is "from" Lerilin, another from Andris and, yes, one of them has a hometown of Marali. She spends much of her time there even now and never lasts more than a few days away without going back. Something about that northern ocean air... Wink

Cass' hometown of choice is Marali. Yet she works for Mirith. I wouldn't mind if she would have to travel back to Marali to have access to things that she left behind when she moved south for her new job. Quite on the contrary. It would make it easier to say that something was kept somewhere else, rather than in the bank account that is equal everywhere you go.

On the other hand, restricting it to guildless people, and to special benefits in shops feels restrictive to me, rather than something that adds to the IC dimension of the game... I too have played a game with "citizenship" in different areas, with benefits at the shops and such, and wasn't particularly excited by that.

However, the idea that people can be other things apart from being from a guild pleases me.

Drac's hometown always has been and always will be lerilin. However, Marali comes a close second.

I moved to Marali. I summer in Port Gast. I was born in Andrus. Don't really care for Andrus, but what can I say. But it seems to me this idea, while attractive, is a wolf is sheep's clothing leading towards TAX. Already it was mentioned that as part of the ideas a chest usage TAX would be implemented. What's next. Checking fees at the banks? Low gold penalty if you do not keep a certain amount of gold or make at least transactions per lunar billing cycle? No taxation without representation!!!!
