A Report to Captain Fang

We were relaxing after a sojourn in the Ice Dungeon, chit chatting. Larzz, Razan, Sumac, Euchra, Delimew, Octar and myself were sipping some lovely white wine, when, in the distance, we heard a horn blow!

A horn? Out in the middle of an island? We jumped on rafts and sped south-west, the direction Sumac and Delimew thought they heard the horn coming from.

We rafted into a small flotilla of Privateers. Not a one would admit who sent them or whom they worked for, but we made quick work of them.

I wondered if you knew of any instance of hornblowing by them?

Warmest Regards,

Borti II

Day 19 of the Fighting Moon. Year 436

It was early in the morning when Euchra awoke to Kookai pounding on the door of her room at the Mirith Inn. "Euchra!" The fighter called. "Wake up!!"

Sleepily rolling out of bed, the cleric threw on a robe and grabbed her pack from beside the door. Rubbing her eyes, she stumbled out into the hallway. "What's wrong, Cookie??" she asked.

"I just got a message from Elwood," her friend said. "He's down by the Dojo and there are a lot of Privateers and Serpents, and some Gapers too!! There's nobody else around to help. Will you come with me?"

Grinning, Euchra laced up her boots. "You know I can't resist an adventure like that. Of course I'll come." Casting a spell of magic reflection on the fighter, she gestured for him to lead the way. "Let's go!"

The pair headed down into the South Sea. The message had said to meet Elwood at Jinker Island, and when they arrived, they found Elwood paddling furiously with three privateers, a sea serpent, and some elementals in pursuit. It didn't take too long to clean up that little mess, after which, Elwood told them that he had been in the area to visit the Token Master, who informed him about some unusual activity.

Even as Elwood was telling them about his conversation with the Token Master, the eerie call of a shell horn was heard in the distance. The group grabbed their supplies and headed towards the sound.

The waters surrounding the Dojo was full of Sea Serpents, and there were several Privateers patrolling the area as well. It was a slow process, but the adventurers were in no hurry and settled in for a good day of fighting. As they got closer to the Dojo Fort, they heard the sound of many voices echoing across the water. They edged closer to the entrance of the fortress, and discovered a pair of Phase Serpents guarding it.

This was not the first time Phase Serpents had been found guarding the Privateer hideout, and apparently not attacking the seafaring men. Could the pirates have some way of controlling the great black serpents? This would need to be investigated.

The Phase Serpents seemed to have an extra resistance to attacks on this day, making it a long and dangerous process to bring them down. However, the trio of adventurers were determined, and eventually the great snakes of the sea were killed.

The Privateers had apparently heard the fighting, and came out in force. Four of the pirates charged right past Euchra, seemingly heading towards Elwood. When they got behind the cleric, though, they suddenly turned around and swung their swords at her. Having given her protection rings to Elwood, the cleric was vulnerable, her robe and flesh sliced in a dozen places before she could blink. All she could see was red as she paddled for her life. Scooting just out of reach of the fatal blow, she fumbled in her pack and managed to drink an invisibility potion right before the privateers managed to finish her off.

Elwood grabbed the attention of the Privateers and led them off on a merry chase while Euchra healed herself and tended to Kookai, who returned from the fortress with his own bunch of bandits. The fighting lasted all day, and it was almost dark again by the time the Dojo was clear and the adventurers stood on the floating platform. Kookai found a chest, but none of the three could unlock it. Euchra offered to take a message to Shayde, and meet the others in Mirith once the rogue had helped them out. Thankfully the rogue was in Mirith when Euchra arrived, and ran down to help Kookai and Elwood with the chest.

Inside the chest was a token for each of the 6 classes, some robes, Blue Moon Gin, and Foehan Vodka. Combined with 41 Privateer heads, 8 Purple eggs, 2 Zionidic Crystals, and a nice supply of gold, the plunder was well worth the efforts to obtain it. No shell horn was recovered, and the group was unable to discover what it's sounding meant.

Day 148 of the Fighting Moon, Year 436

A large group had been hunting dragons in the Ice dungeon. After their hunt, they emerged from the depths into the pre-dawn light. Pulled up close to the island were 2 Privateer ships!!

Larzz, Sumac, Crom, Jastherin, Alexia, Chloe, Angelica, and I jumped right back into the battle. Privateers were jumping over the rails of the ships with Katanas in hand. They were everywhere, and soon we heard a horn blow and a call went up. "We're under attack, to arms!!"

More Privateers swarmed our party, but with 3 skilled clerics, there wasn't too much trouble. Jastherin yelled something about being out of dragon teeth, so I tossed a handful at him from my pack. Shortly after, the privateers all froze, paralyzed by his magic.

Once the privateers were dispatched and the runners chased down, the party boarded the ships. Searching the cabins found some food, but little else, so the ships were sunk on the spot.

Approximately day 160 of the Fighting Moon, Year 436

Larzz, Kookai, Anniqa, Breigje Balloc, Alexia, Lynlyss, Gilante, and I departed the Ice Dungeon after another dragon hunt, and were ambushed by 8 privateers as we were splitting loot. It was a short battle, and no signs were found of a ship or floatilla.

The privateers seem to have some interest in the ice dungeon. Likely they are too cowardly to go in and find the items they want for themselves, so are attempting to rob those leaving the place with sacks of loot. Adventurers should be wary when leaving this dungeon.

Day 60 of the Waking Moon, 437,

Dear Luciella,

We really should train a little in the ice dungeon soon. However, when exiting, privateers frequently attack - we should be on our guard. Today, a band of seven attacked Anniqa, Gilante and me - they had cleverly waited until our companions from the Dragon Riders had departed. We dispatched them, and searched the nearby islands for a base, but found nothing untoward.

I hope to see you soon,

Octar

Day 226 of the Waking Moon
Marali

Dear Borti,

Ever since your return we have contrived to miss each other. I am reduced to sending you correspondence.

There being no threats close to our city, my fingers twitched around my sword hilt with the desire to hunt. Kevin and I discovered a mutual yearning to slay dragons. Lord Crom payed us a visit in Marali, and was seized with the same passion. Sending envoys to Mirith and Andris, we eventually assembled a force to be feared: Kookai, Razan, Sheldon and Amere joined me and Crom in plate. Euchra, Galena and our applicant friend Hideaki brought an enormous supply of ginseng for their healing magics. Kevin provided the fireworks, and the scoundrel Farookh was persuaded to offer his dubious services.

As we assembled on the frozen isle, we were attacked by a band of privateers. We decided to speak to them in the only language they understand: Pirate. 'Avast ye privateers!' 'Arrrrrrr!' 'Ye be going to Davy Jones' Locker!' 'Scurvy Dogs!'. Sadly, even this failed to induce their surrender, and we were forced to decapitate them all instead.

After slaying innumerable dragons, slicing nearly 500 scales from their hulking carcasses, we made our exit to divide the loot. Undeterred by the fate of their comrades, a larger force of privateers ambushed us as we congratulated one another on the hunt. Once again, summary justice was served.

I hope to see you soon,

Armsman Octar

Dear Borti,

Once again I find myself penning you a missive about privateers at the Ice Dungeon. We had assembled a fairly formidable party consisting of our Rebel allies Crom and Rosina, our fearsome fighter friends Kookai and Razan, the wonderful clerics BB, Euchra and Galena, the nimble-fingered Darchine and the mighty REDMAN - the only creature ever known to have defeated Charnath in a battle of pure thought. Such is this great magician's prowess that when he had to leave a little earlier than planned, he simply trundled nonchalantly alone to the exit - as perturbed by the gapers and dracos as much as you or I would be troubled by a giant snail with a sore foot. Thus when his stentorian voice echoed down the hall "Oh My Jinker! There is bad stuff here! I cannot get out!" my blood ran colder than an Ice-Golem's armpit. We raced to the ladder, and found ourselves entirely encircled by a privateer encampment.

The scurvy scoundrels attacked from all sides, but a storm was brewing and the terrible weather seemed to affect them more than us. We swiftly gained the upper hand as REDMAN's magics glued their feet to the frosty rocks whilst we fighters smashed their shelters and their skulls. Miraculously, we all escaped unharmed and Darchine divided up the spoils of war. Many tokens and other wondrous trinkets had been found - I have in mind to make a present of the ranger's token I won to Brother Nial (with whom I patrolled Marali two days ago).

I hope to see you soon,

Octar

It was with great joy that the Rebels were reunited with our beloved Angelica, who had been obliged, against her will, to embark on a long and perilous journey. Needless to say, a celebratory hunt was proposed (nothing too taxing as Angelica still suffered from fatigue). The lovely Fred accompanied us to the cemetery and then across the water to Phase Serpent Island - we had not reached the shore yet when Privateers descended upon us and turned our intended fishing trip into something quite different.

At one stage I feared for poor Fred - some sort of mental paralysis prevented him for striking in his own defence but our men soon realised his predicament and rushed to the rescue. We found their camp in the middle of the island, destroyed it and took possession of their treasures, then Gawr and I escorted a very sick Fred back to land, with a mutual promise that we would have some other adventure together soon. Upon our return to the island, we formed a circle around one of the Privateers' big fires and warmed ourselves up while chatting away. When the fire died out, Wupps made a fresh one and, even if small in comparison to the enemy's, it was sufficient to dry out our feet - our boots had been soaked in water during the fight. We were so happy to be together that we did not mind the smell of mouldy cheese issuing from a certain fighter's lower extremities!

A note of caution to travellers - Privateers have been spotted on the beach outside Andris by Anniqa and Sheldon, as well as at sea, not far from Skull Island, by juff, Gawr and Rosina. These two separate encounters happened at the same time, on Day 205 of the Bleeding Moon, Year 437.

The Pirates strike again!

Fighter Kookai, cleric mikomi and resident wizard Fuoco came under attack soon after leaving Nystral's Tower towards terrafirma.

Some of the cowardly wretches made straight for the cleric but the fighter and the wizard were quick to pounce upon them and gave them no quarter. The heads of the enemy were brought in triumph within the city walls.

Privateer Activity Report
Year 437 Sleeping Moon, Day 226
Privateers were sighted in the northern part of Crescent Island, Andris. They attacked after they saw us. Cleric Ikabi and I interrogated a privateer as to why they were on the island. All I can remember that he said was:

"Yo ho ho! To Davy Jones' locker with ye! Fifteen men on a dead man's chest! Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!"

They had hidden a treasure near a bracken tree. The treasure chest was retrieved and contained gold pieces and a weapon of speed. We also found a stash of Red Nate's Rotgut Rums nearby.

Signed,
Druid Adora

Day 236, Waking Moon, Year 438

Ferrun and I were cleaning up the Lerilin cemetery when we heard voices out to sea. After I ran and go Major (black bear) out of the stable, Ferrun tracked humans on the water and went to see.

He returned followed by 2 privateers and reported a ship on the water just Northeast of the Lerilin cemetery, surrounded by a number of sharks. The privateers were very strong; Ferrun and I had a terrible time killing them and they healed at an astonishing rate when injured. They almost killed Major twice and I required assistance from the Lerilin guard to kill one of them.

We managed to kill off the school of sharks and then needed a run back into town to restock our potions and supplies, after which we contrived to kill the privateers one by one by luring them to land and ganging up on them. After we ended the life of the last one to chase us back to land, we returned to discover that the ship had sunk.

None of them had anything to say other than the usual stuff, and we found no notes or clues as to whether they were connected to other recent events in the region.

Day 226 of the Bleeding Moon, year 438.

I was out on a fishing trip, hoping to find some privateers to take their rum. To my luck, three came and attacked me. I easily out maneuvered the first two and sent them to their grave. Then, keeping the third one alive I tried to get him to talk. With no luck, I ended up just killing him. On his corpse, I managed to find a few bottles of rum. How nice. With my pack getting full, I headed back to Mirith to tell others of the privateers I killed and to show them the fish I caught.

I was in the Circle's guild hall, making explosive dusts, when my sister Heike rushed in and informed me that I was wanted at Lerilin's bank. I hastily dropped my supplies into my chest and hurried around there to find Mayor Palmer and the Druid Budic, he of the Lerilin Vanguard, waiting for me.

They questioned me briefly about my willingness to join the LV, and I told them that I would gladly do so if they felt I could be of service. To my surprise, Mayor Palmer immediately took off my Circle badge and pinned a Lerilin Vanguard badge onto my robe. He then told us of a disturbance he wished us to investigate, down the coast near the Red Battalion guild hall.

Budic and I set off, seeing nothing out of the ordinary. Having passed the bridge to the Mirithian continent, we were unsure where to go when we heard singing from the South. Venturing across the water while avoiding a Sea Serpent and some sharks, we found an encampment and a ship of Privateers.

For a bit we tried to fight them, but I was ill-prepared for this party and had not even any healing potions in my pack. I wanted to run, but I had the feeling this was in the way of a test, and now that I was committed I desperately wanted to prove myself. I was greatly relieved when my companion said that we were outmatched and should return to Lerilin to report and seek aid.

One of the scoundrels pursued us all the way up to the Three Paths hall, but we both hid and got away from his pursuit. Just outside town we met up with the Ranger Serancha, and on the bank steps we saw Jozlyn. I shouted "Privateers!" as we ran by, and both followed us to the docks where Mayor Palmer and Hayate were fishing.

I was disappointed to learn that Hayate was too busy to help us, but Serancha, Jozlyn, and my sister's good friend Abernta volunteered to join us. We made our way back down the coast after grabbing supplies. We were ambushed by a gang of pixies near Three Paths, but they died almost before they could finish telling us how much the forest hates..., and the one Privateer who had pursued us that far earlier died as quickly.

We found the rest of the privateers where we'd left them, although they had stopped singing and appeared to be wandering around looking for us. Budic's black bear attacked them with apparent glee, and the rangers were soon firing arrows. Abernta poisoned and paralyzed, and the battle was on. My lightning bolts weren't doing much damage and my paralyze spells did not last nearly long enough, but I did my best, often running around the edges of the battle with 1 or 2 of them after me while the others fought their mates. We'd not quite finished off the original group when another batch came boiling out of their ship, no doubt alerted by the sounds of battle. Eventually we finished them off, too, and destroyed the shelters and sank the ship. A final 2 or 3 were dispatched on the water along with a school of sharks attracted by the blood, and then we were finished, having killed 21 of the ruffians as well as some pixies who seemed to be helping them.

If we found any clue to their purpose or reason for being there, I did not hear of it. We returned to Lerilin, where we found Mayor Palmer waiting for us at the bank. Budic reported to the Mayor that the privateers and their ship had been destroyed, and I spoke up to say that we certainly couldn't have done it without the help of Serancha, Jozlyn, and Abernta.
The Mayor rewarded them for their aid and then left us while Budic distributed the loot.

Budic and I met the Mayor again later at the LV hall, but that was a private meeting. It suffices to say that I am, officially, a member of the Lerilin Vanguard.

Irika the Wizard

Fortieth day of the Lucky Moon, Year 438

Commander,

I hope you will be pleased to learn that Armswoman Galena and I undertook a patrol of the rivers that lie on the Mirithian border of our territory, in the company of the Vanguard of that city. Their former leader Asliendor tracked some privateers, who seemed to be engaged in constructing a bridge from the central isle to the area close to where the rift appeared. Together with Amere and Cassandra, we vanquished our enemies and destroyed their bridge. It could be they are connected with Captain Jass, suspected by Lord Laricen to be an alias of Major Andon's mercenary brother. However, attempts at interrogation were unsuccessful, so we were not able to determine their purpose.

My sword remains ever at your service,

Captain Octar
