Dearest friend,

I could really do with some of your wisdom in handling that niece of mine. She is growing far too cheeky and belligerent for my taste but I am getting tired of the frequent arguments and I fear her husband has no control over her. I know she has invited you to join her in some of her "walks" so I do hope you can hammer some sense into her rebellious head!

She has taken to roaming on her own causing trouble wherever she goes, picking fights right, left and centre and dragging the undead all over the countryside - I really have no idea how people can pass her sweets instead of giving her a good kick! On a recent trip to Brigobaen she mocked the captain of the guards and would not even be quiet inside the temple... I am told her voice was so loud that the books shook on their shelves - our dear juff could only smile at cleric Blinston to hide his embarrassment.

She recently ganged up with another young cleric, somebody you are well acquainted with - Terliyne. The guards saw them leaving town by the east gate loaded with weapons!!!! After wrecking the woods north east of town, they headed for the cemetery and started throwing insults at the undead, challenging them to come out and fight - they were seen hitting zombies with big clubs which my niece had stolen from giants and, not content with that, the two girls had an argument and a punch-up with pixies - not sure what the quarrel was all about... what has become of the noble art of healing? Where have I gone wrong with bringing her up? Goddess knows how much I spent on her education!

I thought you should know this as Rosie is well capable of leading young Terliyne astray and I can see no end of trouble if those two are left to their own devices.

Yours,

Fuoco

A letter in a very spidery handwriting and full of ink splodges is dispatched to Borti II at his hall.

Day 2 of the Fighting Moon, Andris

Dear Uncle,

I saw what my aunt Fuoco wrote to you and I swear I was not snooping - I only got into her room to look for candles!

The old trout is behaving like a dragon and she keeps giving me rolls of cloth hoping that I will settle nicely at the bank and not get my robes messy. If it is a doll she wanted, she should have gone to a toy shop! I know she has got me out of scrapes a few times and saved my skin but can you please tell her to get off my back?

I too take care of Andris and go on patrol - people are happy that I keep the path clear of nasty undead and they give me sweets. I give good advice to those in need and I do think of the family as well - I often bring my husband nice things I find in the woods instead of selling them in the market!

And alright she got really angry at me when I sneaked into the keep trying to find the senator's biscuits but I have not done it again. As for the arguments in town, I cannot help it if Neblin threatens to kill me and puts a dagger at my throat - passive resistance was not part of my studies in Brigobaen grrrr...

Yours lovingly,

Rosie

[Borti II sits at the bank in Mirith, holding the two letters. His head swivels back and forth, from one letter to the other, and he makes strange gulping noises. Removing several sheets of parchment, wax, candle and quill from his bank chest, he begins to slowly reply with great trepidation.]

To the wizard Fuoco, in care of the Bank of Andris, from Borti II currently at Mirith.

Day three of the Fighting Moon.

Dearest Fuoco,

Greetings friend. Thank you for your help yesterday with the young druid. I got him safely to Lerilin. Then a new adventurer, named Kirzon, appeared at the gates of Lerilin. My day was occupied with helping him.

As far as your dear young niece goes. Might I suggest a very deep breath and a cup of tea?

We cannot to closely confine the young. They must rebel, stretch their wings, challenge authority. This more than anything else is how they learn their place in the world. And some can only learn by doing, although I am not at all convinced that is the case here.

Recall the old tale of the lad who wished to fly. He made wings of wax and feathers, and he did fly. It was his greed to fly higher and faster that was his undoing. He tumbled to the earth after flying too close to the sun, and the heat melted his wings.

Now in no way do I think Rosina is so hard-headed. Quite the opposite, and yet I wouldn't call her biddable either. Think hard. The traits so vexing to you now, as her guardian, will serve her well once she matures. She will be strong, compassionate, funny, wise, resolute. These are not at all bad characteristics.

And perspective... well, think of what else she could be doing! She could be stuffing pixie dust up her nose like a certain rogue of my acquaintance! Even Torcara, Octar's youthful kinswoman, tried pixie dust and nearly died of the reaction. She is neither a beggar nor thief. Whenever any call to her for help she willingly goes at once!

I'd suggest sending her off with older heads, as the only cleric! This will force her to concentrate with no room for tom foolery.

But you will need a way to vent your frustrations, so by all means do write them out and send them to me. I promise, it will be a breath of fresh air for you. And of course, my prayers for her safety go with yours, my friend.

Rosina has also written to me. I will see what I can do to encourage a bit of sobriety.

With much love,

Borti II

P.S. I'm not saying it isn't annoying!

[Sighing he seals and addresses the letter. Then re-reads the letter from Rosina.]

To Rosina of Andris, from Borti II currently in Mirith.

Day 3 of the Fighting Moon.

My Dearest Pookeyhead.

How pleased I was to get a note from you, and the amazing drawings! (These, of course, will go in my Cell in Andris when I return home.) Your artwork is excellent!

Yes I did get your Aunt's letter. As you are both writing to me, I ask your indulgence on this. I won't discuss her concerns with you, nor yours with her. Fair enough?

The problem with adults is they forget they were once young too. They forget the thrill of a crispy autumnal-scented evening, playing in leaves, the first kiss, the beauty of a sunset over the ocean.

Adults want to mould and guide, but mainly they want to keep you safe. Of course that is restrictive to you, no one likes it. But we can recall from whence their concern springs, their need to protect comes from: we are loved. We are considered precious enough to protect. We are valued. These are not bad things. In fact, in today's mad world, they are rare.

I know you can safely patrol Andris alone or with Terliyne. By Saint Alban, the two of you alone are a match for a Lich! But to your Aunt Fuoco you will always be young in her mind's eye. I counsel patience with the understanding that this stems from love.

And yes, Neblin can be vexing. But try to understand his misfortunes as a child. Compare it with your own childhood. It calls for compassion and charity.

Your loving Uncle,

Borti-boo

[Sipping his tea, he seals the letter and addresses it. Borti II reaches for a final sheet of parchment.]

Day 3 of the Fighter's Moon, in the year of 436 of Elara.
Andris.

To Abbot Jaren, St Alban's Monastery, outside Mirith.

My Dear Abbot,

When one is caught between an aunt and her niece, both very strong willed women, one should run away and join the circus.

Your Loving Son in St Albans,

Borti II

[The cleric finishes his letters, checks all seals, and grabs fifty gold from his scrip. He pays the fee for a courier to deliver the missives and stumbles off to bed.]

Day 9 of the Fighting Moon, Year of the Goddess 436

Dear friend,

I received your letter and can only admire your philosophical spirt - resilience is not one of my greatest virtues unfortunately but I did listen to your suggestion and sent Rosie on a rescue mission at the Lady Nystral's Tower as the only cleric this morning.

Alas! Shortly after her return to town she met your young charge, Terliyne and the two sneaked out telling the guards not to let me know... I followed them hiding behind trees and rocks and what I witnessed made me shake with indignation! I grabbed Rosie by the ear and dragged her back to town, threatening to hide all her purple eggs and rings unless she sat quietly to do some dignified work, then sent Terliyne off to Lerilin to help a young fighter in the name of Spencer - hope this will allow us all to breathe a little more freely for the rest of the day!

There is some good news to communicate though - young Terliyne has today improved on her alchemy skills so remember to praise her accordingly.

Trust all is well with you and look forward to our next meeting.

A very tired

Fuoco

[ Borti II looks at the sketches and hides his face in the palms of his hands. Sighing deeply, he fetches ink, quill, parchment and wax. He rereads Fuoco's agitated letter, then puts his face in his hands once again.]

To the Wizard Fuoco of Andris, from Borti II currently in Mirith.

My Dear Fuoco,

Well. I am a little dismayed by the sketches. I don't know which of them starts things up. Terilyne and I chatted in Mirith earlier today, then she hurried off to Andris to see Rosina. I tried to keep her in Mirith, discussing her brother and all.

I don't know which of them instigates and which follows. Six of one and half a dozen of the other I reckon. (I admit being shocked that the Skellie would go for Rosi instead of attacking Terliyne for insulting the Skelli's mum. After all, even the undead had mothers once!)

Honestly, I guess I am more concerned that Rosi thinks the Skeleton is fat. I'd say the Skellie was skin and bones.... okay... well maybe bones and bones, but you get the idea? When was the last time her eyes were checked? Didn't her father have terrible eyesight?

All you can do is take a deep breath. Maybe a hobby arranging roses would be calming? Failing that, a solo hunt or finding that amazing Maggy and teaching her how to blow things up with spells?

Be Well and may St Alban keep you,

Borti II

Day 138 of the Fighting Moon, Year of the Goddess 436

Dear friend,

Humble apologies for the delay in responding to your letter of Day 10. My right hand still occasionally suffers from the injuries inflicted by the sharp teeth of a hungry Sea Serpent - I accidentally punched it one day that I was sailing to Crescent Island... after teaching it a lesson for attacking passing wizards, I took her egg but forgot it in my pocket and left it to rot! I shouldn't really let my thoughts distract me so much.

Well about our young ladies... to be honest, I am more concerned that Terliyne seemed to know the skeletons's mother! Rosina sees what she wants to see, if you take my meaning, and knowing the little rascal I guess she was being sarcastic. I now let her out of town a little more often as she is helping a very young Rebel rogue by the name of Wupps, and she usually behaves when she is with him (not sure for how long though, I have already heard stories of chaotic Bone Mage chases in the woods and Rosie posing as bait!).

As for the hobby you suggest alas! Rosina takes the roses by the buds and uses the stalks to beat Uberh, without removing the thorns... not much of a nice display, after the treatment they get, and I end up having to clear the mess (as if it was not enough having to shoo the sheep out of town!). But with a husband like hers, who lets her get away with everything and even plays the clown to her by wearing funny hats, I stand very little chance.

I do look forward to meeting little Maggy and taking her out with me, it will be a pleasure as well as a distraction from my concerns.

With fond regards.

Foo

PS: Do not even think of suggesting that Rosie should spend a few days in spiritual retreat as a guest of your abbot - she would drive the whole monastery crazy and besides, she is a follower of Elara, the Goddess of Life - what if she started painting the portrait of the goddess all over the walls?

Day 145 of the Fighting Moon, Year 436

Dear Uncle,

Where are you? I have not seen you in a long time. I have things to tell so I shall write instead - Fuoco is keeping me in town making potions and tailoring grrrrr and ok, I know my foot needs some rest to heal properly after kicking ahem 'something'

(Here a large splodge of ink makes the rest of the paragraph illegible)

Despite what my aunt says, I know I am doing the right thing by keeping the path clear of undead - I was with my husband and Wupps one evening and some passers-by praised us, we hid as we got a little embarrassed but they insisted on leaving some nice candies for us! And as for those who say candies are not good for your teeth, I am not THAT stupid, I give them to Nusbalm in town!

I know that creatures in the Andris Park are plotting against me and when I go out for walks a lot of snakes jump out of the bushes and try to attack me, sometimes five at a time, but I am now very swift with my bow and not squeamish at all - once I have killed them, I remove their skins and eggs and carry them in my satchel - I know of some good uses for them! The other day I had an argument with a Giant - he sneaked upon me whilst I was skinning a snake on the beach (he probably wanted the skin for himself) so we started a fight - he was bashing me with his club and I kept punching his face and chest until he had had enough and tried to run away, but I grabbed his own weapon and returned the courtesy. I fear I got carried away as he collapsed to the ground. I debated whether to try and heal him and give him a lecture but fate had already made its decision and the brute exhaled his last breath, so I grabbed his gold (what use would it be to a dead giant anyway?) and ran.

As for those evil trees, the bracken, they have now got into a habit of ambushing me in pairs but I am not having it! I have risked my life a few times but I am not going to let them win, so I stand my ground and fight!

(Here Rosina grins to herself whilst making a pause and dips her quill in the inkpot again)

As for that Uberh, he has been following me in the woods as well - I have a mind to let my husband deal with that traitor, especially after some recent events - he came to pester us as Anniqa and I were minding our own business but the ranger took me by the hand and pulled me away to a safer spot. Is it roses he wants to appease his wife? And this whilst trying it on with me and other women? I give the roses to him alright and if you see him covered in scratches, you'll know who has been dealing with that pest!

(Another splodge of ink obscures part of the letter - it seems that now Rosina is relating some conversation)

(Anniqa): I just got a strange thought in my head
(Rosina): really?
(Anniqa): it was "Octar says to say hi to a rose"
(Anniqa): *shrugs*
(Rosina): Smile
(Human): Hey ladies. *winks*
(Rosina): Uberh!
(Anniqa): go wink somewhere else, will you!
(Rosina): I am a married woman!!!
(Rosina): you cannot fool me with roses you know
(Anniqa): come Rosie. lets go
(Rosina): and
(Rosina): this is Rebels' corner!
(Rosina): Shoo!
(Human): Did it hurt?
(Rosina): what?
(Rosina): getting married?
(Human): When you fell from heaven? *winks*
(Rosina): no
(Anniqa): aah, a funny guy
(Rosina): I landed on Gawr's lap
(Rosina): * winks *
(Anniqa): let's move
(Rosina): naughty man!
(Anniqa): I didn't know that was the rebel's corner
(Rosina): well
(Rosina): we now gather there...

(Yet another blob of ink)

Well uncle, I do hope my foot heals fast now as I long to leave town again. Please send news when you can!

With much affection

Rosie

Day 14 of the Lucky Moon, Year 437

Dear Uncle Bo,

I guess you are in spiritual retreat as I have not seen you about. I am feeling a bit lonely at the moment as my husband fancies himself a bard and travels to alehouses and inns in remote towns to play his music (no doubt sampling the ale as he goes along). Wupps is very often away and so is Ogma. From time to time, I go out hunting with Janurah or Jim Black, but I have not seen Terliyne since we fought that horrid Male Spider!

I find myself often alone at the Andris cemetery but the undead now refuse to play with me and pretend they are dead - where is my partner in crime?!

I think I have given up trying to educate Ysadril. The other day I wanted to explain to him what a figure of speech is so I said to him: "Ysadril, what do you do if Fuoco tells you to call it a day..." Well, the impossible man did not let me finish - his eyes brightened up and he said: "Why, Mrs Gawr, I be running to the ale house and orderin an honest mug of ale!

But now let me tell you something that made me roll on the floor laughing for an hour! One day I was sitting sitting by the moat when I saw him pass with a very determined look. A ray of sunshine, catching some metal object sticking out of his pocket, dazzled me for a moment... it was a dagger! The man did not even notice me so, curious to see where he was going at that time of day (too early for his visit to the park with his mates), I rose and followed him at some little distance. After some extraordinary circuit, it became clear that he had reached his destination - nonetheless than my aunt! I had to cover my mouth and bite my finger - the man is following Fuoco now and not me! I am dying to let Terliyne know!

Well Uncle, I do hope to hear from you soon.

A hug from

Rosie

Day 160 of the Dancing Moon, Year of the Goddess 439

Dear Uncle Bo,

You'll never guess what!

My younger sister Marian decided to open a school for the Lerilin rats - she is teaching them how to bite! I went to visit her today and she looked all prim and proper in her teaching uniform (but alas, something tells me it will soon be torn to shreds!). Her classes are proving popular and are very well attended - a little too much perhaps for her own good. I think she could do with an assistant - who knows, perhaps Hayate could give her a break by teaching anatomy!

They sure did not like me as a visitor - I am not the sort who offers the other cheek so, after demolishing half of her all too eager students, I thought it wise to abandon the premises and go pick a bone or two with the local skeletons, but that did not last long - the sun was so warm that I felt drowsy and soon fell asleep under a palm tree.

I am writing from the comfort of our guild hall - the table is a bit too well polished for my taste but the guards are kind, especially Tarquin, who keeps offering refreshments and has made sure there are no fleas in my bed.

Send news you naughty Uncle- I believe I have not seen you since the coronation!

Yours,

Rosie The Rat Catcher

Day 105 of the Lucky Moon, Year of the Goddess 439

Dear Uncle Bo,

I am still waiting to hear from you when you get a chance but in the meantime I need to tell you a secret.

A few days ago I met Senator Falov Ellychas in town and he looked troubled. It seems that Helda Grantham is a bit too hard on the workers who are constructing our new port - according to Falov, they are paid next to nothing and do not get enough milk breaks! I hear they went on strike and that Senator Grantham retaliated threatening to bring in people from Marali. Of course that is my home town but I think it would be unfair to deprive Andrisians of work - they too need to put bread on the table!

Well, I am not a rich cleric but the thought of those overworked and underpaid labourers made my blood boil so, after thinking hard, I decided to disguise myself as a farmer and set up a roadside market in the hope of raising some funds. You may argue that some tailoring would perhaps be a more profitable business but you know how much I hate to be stuck within the city walls!

I am sure dear Falov will do me the courtesy of accepting whatever I can donate and please do not let my family know of my enterprise.

Yours,

Rosie
