| But, you can make yourself miserable trying to find and to work for happiness. Easier to just let go of things. When you do let go, then you quit making bad decisions about trying to make yourself happy. After you quit making bad decisions, you don't have to deal with the consequences of those bad decisions. And, suddenly life is not so bad. My advice: just let go. Do not look for it. Do not work for it. |

I dunno... What is clean, without the dust? What is light, without the dark? What is heat, without the cold?
And what is happiness, without the sadness? We need sadness in our lives: It's what separates the good from the bad. Without sickness, how do we even know what healthy is? Sadness defines happiness. You need both to be able to come to terms with it, and make yourself a better person, not to mention the world around you. |

It is happiness without sadness.
"But, you will not appreciate your happiness as much without knowing misery and sadness." Ok, then. Let us all make ourselves as miserable and unhappy as we can just so we can know the highest level of happiness.
Moreover, while knowing misery and sadness might allow one to appreciate their happiness more, it does not mean that one day that one will ever realize that state. Misery and unhappiness is overrated.
And I will take a room that has never been dusty, even it means that I never know that it is clean. It is clean, whether I realize it or not.
And remember: just let go. |

Yes but the difference between the room and our own state is that while we don't have to recognize the room being clean for it to be clean, we DO have to realize when we are happy, otherwise we'll hide that feeling. Why do you think that some rich people don't consider themselves rich? This is because they have never been poor. I could even say that I'M rich and i'm pretty middle class.
I'm not saying we should seek sadness, but I know it is a necessary part of our lives, and we should know that, is all. |

I reject this assumption, and I see it as nothing but an assumption. And, if it is what you build your argument on, I reject that, too. What evidence do you have? Please, offer something more than a tenuous analogy.

This argument fails to explain the people how have been rich all of their life and yet still feel rich, and know it, and do not bother to hide it. So, it would seem one does not NEED to know what it is like being poor to understand what it is like being rich. The only thing about never having been poor is that they don't what it is like to be poor.
All that can be said about the person that has never been miserable is that they have not experienced misery. I fail to see how it proves that one cannot be happy.
All of this nonsense (including what I've contributed) fails to even address what it means to be happy. Our debate is pointless if we are not even going to bother defining the term or a proper domain of discource. You might define happiness one way. And I may another.
That said: You can make yourself miserable, trying to make yourself happy. Just let go. And if happiness does not find you, you at least will be less miserable, if you will feel any misery at all. Numbness is not all that bad. [A philosophy created one blotto-ed, insomnia filled night alone in an apartment in St. Petersburg, Russia. Made life a lot easier, this much is true. And happier I must say.] |

| What he's trying to say (totally off topic) is that if you have never experienced a strawberry flan then you will never appreciate a chocolate cheesecake. Oh, now I have the munchies hehehee. |
