It was the morning of Day 162 of the Sleeping Moon, when an ominous rumbling shook the continent of Lerilin.

Leha, who had stayed in Lerilin after having dinner with Mayor Palmer the night before, saw ash spewing into the sky, and sent a messenger to Mirith looking for aid. The messenger found Euchra still asleep in her room at the inn, and woke her with a loud pounding on her door. "Message for you, Madam!!" He called. "Urgent news from Miss Leha in Lerilin!!"

Hauling on her boots and leathers, Euchra grabbed her pack and checked her stocks. Nodding in satisfaction, she once again thanked her policy of never going to bed without restocking first. One never knew what might happen, and theh stores always ran out of ginseng at the most inopportune moments.

Tossing her pack over her shoulder, the cleric headed out of town. Through the portal to Lerilin, and then a quick underground run through the ant cave. Dodging a few bats, she surfaced much further south, and headed for Redman's Hall where the note had said to meet. As she approached the hall, Euchra saw Leha and Elwood loitering there. When the cleric asked where everyone else was, the answer came back "We're it." Well. This was not right. The note said a cleric was needed. Obviously, there was far more need of killers than healers. This was made especially obvious when the trio went to see what the situation was.

The next hour Euchra spent trying to keep Leha alive as the wizard used her stave on five elementals at a time, wearing nothing more than a flimsey robe. At the same time, the cleric had her hands full trying keep the bone mages from frying the young ranger alive. It was a hopeless effort. Miraculously nobody died, and the cleric called for retreat. The next four hours were spent restocking nearly two hundred potions that had been used between the trio. This was not Euchra's ideal way to start off the day.

Thankfully, as the last potions were being mixed, Mustafaa arrived. The messanger had dont his job well!! Sighing with relief and gratitude, Euchra gave the fighter a great bear hug, and the foursome headed back to the erupting volcano. Things went much better this time round. Mustafaa took on the Dracos, Elwood shot down the Bone Mages, and Leha was actually casting spells. Yes, it was much more efficient this way. Creatures were pouring out of the mouth of the volcano at a rapid rate, but with some actual muscle added, the adventurers stood strong.

Eventually the eruption subsided, but a loud roaring was to be heard coming from the entrance to the volcano. The adventurers circled the Volcano and found no further signs of trouble, so returned to the entrance, where the dragon's roaring was the loudest. Everyone agreed that the dragon must be right inside the entry chamber, but none of them relished the throught of fighting a dragon in the chamber that was capable of killing adventurers with it's normal inhabitants. Elwood went in briefly to check, and came out gushing blood. "It's right there!!" The ranger cried. "It was waiting there and it BIT ME!!"

Once Elwood was all patched up, and enough ale had been drunk to give the lot some courage, the countdown was on. Apparently there was no question that this was going to be attempted, so Euchra snugged on her Lesser Mana Ring that had been new at the start of this adventure, and gave Mustafaa a nod. "Let's go!" they shouted together, and jumped.

Thankfully, the dragon had been feeding so the chamber was close to empty, except for the great beast. Leha and Elwood set about dispatching the few lesser creatures, while Mustafaa set himself on the dragon. Even with her trusty ring on to help with her mana supply, Euchra was hard pressed right from the start. Each dragon bite took a good half of the fighter's health, and he had a lot of health to keep healed. The room was hot and sulpherous, and the air thick.

Euchra thought she was at the limit of her strength when a flood of fire creatures entered the chamber. The room filled with rust beasts, hell hounds, lava spiders, and fire elementals, and the dragon was not even half way to dead. The thick scales turned aside Mustafaa's sword more often than not, and when he did get a slice in, he had to yank to pull it loose for the next swing. Elwood and Leha had their hands full trying to ward the other creatures off, and the cleric was using every drop of magical juice she could squeeze out of herself.

Several times it was certain that this tiny group was going to perish, but somehow, with luck, skill, and a few well timed hits, the dragon fell to the ground, dead. Unfortunately Elwood had been taken down in the battle with the fire creatures, but was quickly brought back to life, and managed to unlock the loot from the dragon's corpse. There were 15000 gold pieces, some scales, teeth and a Pure Fire Crystal found on the dragon.

As Elwood looted the dragon, the others began to examine what they had glimpsed on entering the room. There were five runes laid out on the floor. North, South, East, West, and one in the center. On the center rune was what appeared to be another Pure Fire Crystal. Both this and the one the dragon was carrying, found together at the time of an eruption, had to mean something. The runes were of the kind the adventurers had seen in previous encounters with black mages, and the use of fire pures....it would follow that there was a black mage on the loose, and he was doing some experiments or enchantments involving both the Volcano and the Lava Dungeon.

This point was proven when the party unlocked and removed the crystal from the runes. The whole volcano shook and for the next two hours it spewed toxic fumes and smoke into the air. The party had to run upwind, or they would be violently ill from the poison. Upwind, they were ambushed by a flock of pixies, even as delimew and Bronte arrived, having belatedly recieved the message that had been sent to Phoenix Dawn hall by Mustafaa.

After some time, the fumes blew away, and the volcano was quiet once again. Mustafaa decided to use the Pure Crystals they had found, and take a look inside the Lava Dungeon, as this was their only clue to where the mage might have gone. He did not find a mage, but found three angry dragons and a pair of Magma Golems awaiting him. There was no information to be gathered at this point. The adventurers would have to gather the strongest team possible, and search the Lava Dungeon for whoever was playing with the black arts and endangering the population with the resulting volcanic eruptions.

((OOC: A time has been set. For those comfortable fighting level 15 creatures and surviving magma pulse, please come prepared with full armor, rings, and 2 fire pures. 10PM Saturday Pacific Time / 2PM Sunday Japan Time))

While being a man of the cloth I feel obligated to help other people, I am afraid that this adventure is set too late for me. I don't want to start rumors of what a holy man is doing running around at such a late hour. I wish you the best of luck.

After washing off the sweat of an exhilarating hunt, Shayde writes a quick note and delivers it to her neighbors at Pheonix Dawn Hall.

Dear Varto,

Sorry you were unable to make the trip.

As I'm sure Mustafaa will tell you, we were greeted at the portal by 4 red dragons. The trip through the dungeon was very long and very dangerous. There were far more Magma Golems and Dragons than had been seen on any previous trips to the Lava Dungeon.

It took almost a full day and a half to make our way around the circuit just once. In this time we defeated approximately 17 Magma Golems and 29 Red dragons. All the chests were checked, and all the corners searched, but there was no sign of any mage, runes, or other signs of black magic. It seems that whatever caused the volcano to erupt that day, was caused by the runes and the pure fire crystal. There doesn't seem to be any link to the Lava dungeon, unless the increased number of creatures means anything.

I would guess that the upheaval in the Volcano has caused more magma to be released, thus attracting more creatures. As to the eruption and the black magic runes... it remains a puzzle.

Attached are some sketches from the hunt. Hopefully next time we can set up a more suitable time for you to join.

Regards, Shayde

Preface: I have waited some time for others to report the event preceding this one, which I know nothing about, but believe is related. Unfortunately matters are proceeding at a rate which necessitates the reporting of these events in a timely fashion, so I don't think these reports should be held off any longer.

Day 61 of the Waking Moon, Year 438

The Volcano was erupting. Euchra could see it from the steps of Mirith bank. A steady stream of smoke rising in the Southeast. The adventurers on the bank steps didn't seem too concerned, busy splitting loot from whatever adventure they had just returned from. Razan glanced over at Euchra, "There will be more Dragons soon." he stated, tilting his head towards the smoke streaming into the sky. "We'll need you to come with us this time."

Well, that didn't answer her questions about what the devil had happened, or why the heck they were at Mirith bank if there was trouble at the Volcano, but the cleric supposed that would have to wait. Hopefully one of them would write a report on the matter. It seemed that she was one of the the only ones who bothered reporting things these days, which made it very difficult to find out what went on when she wasn't around!

Euchra hoisted her pack full of reagents, grabbed an orange pure, and set off for the portal. She would go and check out the scene while the others sorted themselves out and made their way over. The journey was short, through the ant cave and down past the hall where the great Redman lived. She peeked inside, but didn't see any sign of the great wizard. Disappointed, but determined, she pushed on and headed to the volcano entrance.

Razan caught up to her as she arrived, and together they discovered a surprising sight. This was not a natural eruption at all!! There was a sign out front, as if it were a carnival. "Here be the dragons" it read. Behind the sign was a great pen made of fires, holding a pair of dragons, half a dozen red dracos, and of all things, an ice chest. Behind it all, the volcano spewed smoke and ash into the air, like the backdrop in some eerie magical theatre.

Soon the others arrived. Hisashi, Larzz, Taylor, Sobiya, Fulhal, Sam and Heike. Once they got there, the fires magically opened, and the denizens of the volcano poured out. There wasn't too much trouble at first, since the party thought that all they had to deal with was the creatures in the pen. They were gravely mistaken. They were only halfway through the first creatures, when the Volcano erupted again. More Dragons and dracos poured out onto the adventurers. Bravely they stood against the assault. The Volcano erupted again. And again. And again!!! There were at least twenty eruptions that night, each one pouring out more dragons and dracos onto the adventurers.

So many dragons and dracos, and no rogue to unlock them. Many went unlooted before someone sent Fulhal to fetch Gilante. Larzz unlocked the ice chest at one point, but didn't loot it, so it was looted by a draco and the contents lost forever, making Euchra of the opinion that fighters should not be given the ability to pick locks. At all. In any case, they were too busy to worry about it much at the time.

The brave Heike was unable to assist in the fighting, but with the party being overwhelmed so many times, she saw Razan take a pair of dragons for a run around the volcano, and took her cue. Waving her arms at a flock of dracos, the unarmored druid diverted them from the clerics. When the young dragons turned on the druid like she was a new kind of candy, she laughed and took them off on a merry chase through the forest, likely saving the party in the process.

Finally the eruptions slowed down and ceased, and the fires went out. A Mirith Scout arrived, and congratulated the party on their success. The weary clerics were collapsed in a puddle on the ground, barely able to sit up. The Scout informed them that he had found a draco that was carrying a lot of items. He said he had no use for them, so the party could have them if they wished. What luck, that the scout had found the draco that had looted the chest! The adventurers had thought it was gone forever!

The Scout had the clerics roll their pocket dice. Taylor rolled high and won a GM Lesser Mana Ring. Euchra and Sobiya each got a regular Lesser Mana ring and rejoiced. Euchra doesn't know what the others received, except that Heike was gifted with a GM Ring of Lesser Heal for her bravery.

((OOC: I think this was one of the best "new generation" RTQs to date - for setup, continuity and difficulty level. It beat out the ARD one that is the next report to come also. - keep up the great work, and thanks!!))

Day 71 of the Waking Moon, Year 438

Part 1

The volcano was erupting again. Perhaps this time they would find out who was causing all the ruckus. One of these days they would, for these eruptions were certainly not natural. The original party this day consisted of Mustafaa, Bertrand, Chrodan, Sobiya, Ikabi, Marian, Larzz, Redman, and Serancha. Others would join later, most of whom are shown in the sketches included in this report. ((Any omissions are unintentional.))

Much as on the previous occasion, the Volcano spewed ash and smoke in the background, and there were dragons and dracos in a pen in front of it. A sign stated "Danger, Lava Ahead" and this time the pen was made of rock, rather than fire. An opening to the pen was blocked with three large fires. Very curious.

Some pixies came to see what all the commotion was about, and entertained themselves while the party got themselves assembled. Once everyone was in position and the pixies taken care of, the dragons were released from their pen by someone unseen. This pattern was repeated many times over. Each time the party was fighting the dragons, the volcano would erupt and more would appear in the pen, trapped by fires. When the dragons being fought were killed, the new ones were released. On and on it went, with never more than three dragons at a time, and maybe a couple of dracos and rust beasts, easily handled by the party. Then everything stopped.

A dreadful suspicion came over Serancha and Mustafaa, and they turned to REDMAN, requesting him to repair their armor. The wizard agreed, and took them to his guild hall to perform the repairs. When they returned, the clerics had restocked their potions. Serancha took the clerics aside and told them what they suspected. "If we are correct, there will be an Ancient Red Dragon coming soon." she told them. "Now, nobody has seen one for a very long time, but last time we did, it had a very very powerful spell that fireballed everyone in sight of it. This spell killed almost everyone in that party. I don't know if this will be the same, but for safety's sake, I would like you to cast Magic Reflection on everyone, and all clerics should wear their robes of resistance."

Turning to the other fighters, rangers and rogues that had recently arrived, Mustafaa, Redman and Sera instructed that nobody without Greater Protection Rings should attack an Ancient Dragon, for it would kill them in a single bite. Redman clarified this by saying that only Larzz, Mustafaa and Serancha should attack the dragon. Hoping that everyone was prepared, they all turned to the pen.

As they turned, a Magma Golem appeared in front of them. Well, the preparations were the same for this in any case, so nothing was wasted. The battle wasn't too long, although the fireball field took it's toll on some, and others learned their lesson about attacking a monolith while wearing a robe, but nothing unexpected. Soon enough, the golem was taken down, and when it was, a Sorcerer appeared in the opening of the pen, with an Ancient Red Dragon behind it. The suspicions of the adventurers had been correct.

"Do you like my pet?" the sorcerer asked. When someone asked if he was the cause of all these eruptions, the answer was "Mayhap." The Sorcerer was not inclined to conversation, he only told the party that it was time for them to die, then released the Ancient Dragon from its pen.

Part 2

The battle didn't go too badly, as battles against ancient dragons go. It would have been flawless, but a couple of latecomers missed the warnings about attacking it without rings. No blame for that though, since there's no such thing as a perfect situation, although this was as close to it as one could hope for. The fireball field was not as powerful as the last time an Ancient Red had been encountered, and this probably saved the party. There were the expected number of deaths, but thanks to some quick thinking and timely healing, the dragon was brought to its death.

Everyone was freshly resurrected, catching their breath and starting to feel pretty good about the victory, when the Sorcerer appeared again. "I am not done with you yet!" he shouted at them, and promptly released another Ancient Red Dragon.

There was no time to prepare, no time to repair, and no time for the clerics to restock their potions. The dragon was loose, casting powerful fireballs everywhere and summoning dracos to join the attack. This time things didn't go so well. This dragon ate well. One after the other the dragon ate the adventurers. It plowed through the clerics like a fighter through a plate of gaper stalks, and had rogues for dessert. Serancha managed to get its attention and took off at a run, hoping there was a cleric still alive to resurrect the party. Through the forest she ran, with the great flaming beast on her tail. The dragon roared insults, and she ignored them, leading the dragon away so her friends could have the time they so desperately needed to recover before they could kill this monster.

Serancha reached the ocean to catch her breath while the dragon paced on the beach. She splashed water on her face to cool herself, and when she looked up, the dragon was gone and Dester was there in it's place. The dragon had turned into Dester?? What??? She must be hallucinating. Dester said he hadn't seen the dragon, but Sera had only looked away for a moment. The rangers ran back to the party and found them battling the dragon again. What the heck had happened? This made no sense. It must be that sorcerer at work again.

The rangers dove back into the battle, and apparently everyone had had enough time to recover, for the battle went much better this time, and the Ancient Red Dragon was finally put to death. The volcanic eruption finally ceased and a chest was found with many treasures inside it. A Greater Protection Ring, Ring of Greater Heal, Essence of Speed and a GM Robe of Protection were some of the highlights included in the items found. The sorcerer vanished, and the entrance to the volcano remained blocked off when the adventurers left.

Rumors have since been coming in of the Volcano being "Under Construction" but the author of this report has yet to verify this.

(apologies for the late posting, this is the RTQ that happened just before the Volcano event Shayde has written)

61st of the Waking Moon, Year 438

A few adventurers had gathered at the Rock Maze for a Hill Giant hunt. It wasn't long after we had slayed a few of these beasts when Bradley yelled ėshelter!î. The Rangers soon tracked a large number of Brigands and Mercenaries south west of us. As we moved closer to explore what was happening we saw that they had set up camp in one of corners of the maze.

A battle quickly ensued with a number of bracken, hill giants & pixies. As we moved forward we realized we had cornered the Brigands in a pocket of the maze, cutting off any chance of escape. Using this to our advantage the warriors launched the assault against these bandits. The strength, experience and weaponry of the group made light work of the Brigands. One by one, each bandit went down and the combat ground to its inevitable conclusion. Not all of us had made it through the battle alive. Unfortunately Cael's beloved pet had been slain.

A Mirith Scout appear just after the last Brigand has been slayed. He advised he came to warn us of the danger but was a little too late. He kindly rewarded us for destroying the camp of Brigands and protecting the city of Mirith.

As we began to make our way out of the Rock Maze we stopped short, as in the distance a thick black smoke had started pouring out of the volcano and ash began filling the air. We received word from a messenger pigeon that beasts had escaped from the volcano and to be wary. As i stood there restocking the warriors potions, I could just make out the sound of a low rumble, it was almost an inaudible sound that shook more then it was heard. The adventurers once again braced themselves for battle but none of us had expected a battle of this voracity.

We felt the ground shake as they landed. The dragons took in a breath of air, gave out an angry growl and poised to strike. The warriors launched into attack surrounding the beasts. With every wound they received the Red Dragons roared and the searing heat from their breath passed over our bodies. Even with the strength and experience of the warriors the battle was extremely hard and lengthy. Many people had fallen into the grey during this battle but the warriors that remained fought on and these firey beasts succumbed to their blades.

We were once again greeted by the Mirith Scout who expressed his sincere apologies for all the deaths, but also applauded us on our bravery and efforts in slaying these escaped dragons.

As we made our way back to Mirith to rest our tired bones, the volcano had stopped spewing ash and dragons, or so we thought....

(People involved in this RTQ included: Sam, Taylor, Sobiya, Hisashi, Jedd, Razan, Leha, Cael, Bradley, Beyoglu, Fulhal & apologies for any missed names)

101st Day of the Waking moon, year 438

Captain,

I was removing certain dangers to shipping between the Vanguard Hall and Poison Island, when I spotted ash clouds over the southern horizon. The volcano has been unstable of late, and I immediately responded, knowing that the infernal creatures would be disturbed by any eruption. When I arrived at the volcano, clouds of ash obscured my vision, but I could make out a few adventurers through the smog. My fellow fighters Mustafaa and Razan, wizards Fuoco, Rondino and Leha, clerics Euchra, Ikabi, Mirrim and Hinata, rangers Ogma and Sam, and latterly the rogue Gilante joined battle with many dragons and dracos, as well as a host of lesser denizens of the volcano.

Through the ash, we could make out a gigantic winged creature circling above us. As the volcanic eruptions continued, its darker shadow in the ashen skies grew ever larger. The wind from the beating of its wings blew hot in our faces, and at last through the smoke we could see the terror that had stirred from under the mountain.

The onslaught of the ancient was upon us. The fire from its breath killed all the younger adventurers instantly. The dracos that fluttered in its wake routed most of the party. After the Ancient had claimed a few more lives, only Mustafaa, Euchra and I were left to fight the beast. First Mustafaa fell, then I too slipped into the grey. Fortunately enough of our party still had their lives and their wits about them to lure the thing away, then we tried once more to vanquish the creature after we were resurrected. Though we managed to wound the great dragon significantly, it was all to no avail as one by one we fell once more. With out party in tatters, I ran the creature though the forest. The beast lost track of me, and rose up again on the thermals, basking in the heat of the lava and the glory of its supposed victory.

Beneath the ash clouds, our party regrouped. Hisashi had grabbed his rings and his club, and new hope filled the company. When once again the monster descended, we were a little better prepared. The breath of the dragon once again claimed many lives, and when once again its offspring came in its wake they were dealt with more efficiently. Nonetheless, the Ancient dragon mocked out feeble efforts, it knew it was winning.

The clerics were spent. Euchra had been swigging potions, twisting mana rings and burning ginseng at an astonishing rate, but even this was insufficient. The fighters' armour was dented, and their defensive stances beaten into submission. The wizards spells and rangers arrows barely scratched a single blood-red scale. As the dragon turned to a wounded Mustafaa, its jaws gaping wide and its belly belching vile fumes, it seemed that we were doomed.

Just before those horrific jaws snapped shut, the mighty Mustafaa seized our only chance. With his final breath, his last strength, he performed an act of courage worthy of a true champion of Ybarra. Knowing he would surely die, he flung himself headlong into the dragon's jaws and pointed his weapon upwards. The force with which those dragon teeth closed would have crushed a rock into powder. The point of Mustafaa's blade was driven straight up to the brain with this same force, and all the dragon's long years of cunning were cut short.

A great cry of victory went up from the company. After the fallen were restored, the party divided the spoils. Burnt, bloodied but unbowed, we made our separate ways back. I'm sorry to say that the thick fumes and ash made my sketches of the events very hazy. Hopefully others with keener sight could supply a few scenes from the battle.

I hope to discuss certain other matters with you soon.

I remain at Marali's service,

Captain Octar

(OOC: would be much obliged for some decent screenshots.)

Dear Octar,

I didn't have much time for sketching that day, but I did manage to get a couple of images for posterity.
