Day 208 of the Sleeping Moon, Year 437
The fighter darted through the narrow passageway in the rocks, a Hill Giant lumbering after him. With surprising dexterity, Jedd doubled back and leapt away from the beastís enormous club that soared through the air. In a few moments he had led the creature to a wide clearing in the rocks, where his hunting companions waited for him: Leha the wizard, Sobiya the cleric, Sam the ranger, and Budic the fighter. Jedd ran up to meet them and steeled himself for the jolt that he knew as imminent. But it didnít come. A dark figure sped in front of Jeddís field of vision, and the next thing that Jedd saw was the giant lying dead on the floor.
Looking around, Jedd saw a warrior clad in black armor with a blue breastplate that hadnít been there before. The warrior carried a mysterious rune sword as well. Jedd looked at the warriorís open helmet, noticing the face of a woman.
ìYou folks donít hit very hard, do you?î she remarked.
ìApparently not!î Jedd said, still overwhelmed by the events that had just taken place. ìWhere are you from, stranger?î Jedd asked.
ìHere and there. I travel a lot. Sometimes I get bored and go on a hunt.î
Sobiya then inquired about her blue-tinted armor and how she had managed to come by it.
ìItís my dress armor for when I meet someone. Found it in a chest with the sword. I had to battle a dragon. First he wanted to riddle me, so we traded riddles until he couldnít answer mine. He started fuming and snorting smoke out of his nose.î So it appeared that Alica had brains as well as brawns, as Alica was the name that the others called her.
Budic then asked for Alica to repeat the riddle that she defeated the dragon with, but she said that she was saving the riddle for the next dragon that she had to face. However, she offered to give Budic a different riddle.
ìI am mother and father,î Alica began, ìbut never birth nor nurse. Iím rarely still yet never wander. What am I?î
Moments later, Budic stated that she was obviously a flower. But Alicaís answer was a tree. She seemed to be impressed, commenting on the similarities of the two answers. After another riddle, Alica suggested that they go to the bank and riddle for prizes or gold. Everyone quickly agreed, and they walked back to town.
Alica rummaged through her pack and took out five items for the five adventurers that were present, including various rings, weapons, and armor. Each person was given one riddle for themselves to answer, and if they answered correctly, they won a prize. Enthusiastically, Jedd volunteered to be first to try and guess a riddle. A moment later, he thought about it and realized he hadnít really ever tried his hand at riddles before, and he knew he probably wouldnít do too well. But he had nothing to lose.
The riddle that Alica gave him went, ìWhat work is it that the faster you work, the longer it is before you are done? And the slower you work, the sooner you are done?î
Jedd pondered for a while about it, stumped. After several minutes when he couldnít give an answer, Alica revealed it to be roasting meat on a spit. Or, in the case of dragons, roasting people. The others went, each with their own riddle of which others may tell the stories. Jedd began to think and started to scribble on a piece of parchment, hoping to redeem himself. Soon, a few more people arrived and Alica pulled out more riddles for them.
After many riddles later, Alica decided to add a twist to the game and took everyone that wanted to participate to the temple. If they answered correctly, they received a nice prize. If they answered incorrectly, Alica threatened to kill them. Jedd didnít doubt that last part for a moment.
Two riddles followed, and within seconds, the great delimew had a correct answer for both. Jedd thought that delimew must have had a lot of experience with riddles. When the riddles finished, Jedd made an announcement: ìAlica, might you be obliged to answer a riddle of my own? It is quite short.î
Alica and agreed and Jedd proceeded to speak the riddle that he had been working out ever since he initially lost. He read, ìI am mighty and strong, in more ways than one. I come from all lands, and I come from none. I can defeat the strongest foe without batting an eye. Now, tell me please, who am I?î
Alica pondered for a while, and then said that she could only think of two possible answers. Jedd agreed to let Alica use both answers.
ìGod or death.î She specified.
ìWell then, Iím afraid you are incorrect.î
ìAlas. What was the answer?î
ìWhy, the answerÖis you.î
Alica seemed impressed, bowing to Jedd, and giving him a reward of which Jedd was honored to accept. She then turned to the crowd, asking if they liked riddle games. Jedd responded positively, as did a number of others. She asked if people would be interested if she visited a big more regularly to have riddle games, and Jedd and many others expressed their interest.
Vipetha then came up with a riddle of her own which also partially stumped the great warrior, prompting Alica to reward Vipetha as well. Alica then appeared to be ready to depart, so Jedd spoke up: ìWell, I look forward to our next meeting, Alica.î
ìIndeed I also,î she replied, ìbut you should know I am a free lance. If sometimes we meet on opposing sides in battle, it is because of a contract I accepted. However, no contract will ever diminish my love of riddles. So if I am in your fair city, fear not from my hand.î Then she took her leave.
Jedd returned to the bank, with his fighter brain throbbing. He felt like it was the first time that he had ever really used his brain in that manner. This riddle gameÖit intrigued him greatly. He truly was looking forward to his next meeting with Alica the Blue Hermit, regardless of the side of the battlefield in which they met. |

The next day, Budic had just returned from a short hunt at the cemetery with his trusty Sludge Beast. He placed his zombies brains down at the base of the steps for anyone to take and as he looked like up he saw Alica in her shining armor standing at the bank.
"Oh well met Budic," she said.
"Hello," Budic responded casually as he mixed up an extra invisibility potion.
"Interested in another riddle?" Before Budic had any time to ask questions of her being back in Mirith.
"I would love one."
"Okay... I have seas aplenty yet not a drop of water. I have many forests yet not a tree. I have deserts and not a crumb of sand. I have cities and no people in them. What am I?"
Budic was dumbfounded. His brain still ached from the night before. After a few moments he shamefully admits, "I don't know," and bows his head.
"Alas, friend. A map."
"Aha!" Exclaimed Budic. Alica then asked if Budic had a riddle for her, "I'm afraid not," he said.
After some small talk reminiscing about how much fun last night's riddles were, the two bid farewell and Alica went on her way. |

220th Day of the Sleeping Moon, Year 437
Mirith bank was bustling, which was strange for this hour of the night. I had taken my pet bat out of the stable to stretch it's wings and I sensed it enjoyed the company of Sam's and Elwood's pet bats which also happened to be at the bank.
I'm not sure if it were our pets that attracted them but we found ourselves under attack by a swarm of Giant Bats. As these bats fell to the spells and swords of the warriors they were soon replaced by a swarm of pixies. Since everyone was already on guard, the pixies were soon done away with.
In quiet conversation, I said to Sam ìThese Guards must be drinking on the job againî and he replied ìAs usual, these guards are worthlessî.
Stepping out from the shadow, a Mirith Guard approached us. ìI should arrest you for slanderî the Guard said unsheathing his sword.
ìI've killed enough of your types to not put up with youî Sam replied as he equipped his short bow.
ìIs it prison you wish? the Guard said as he moved closer towards us.
"Its your death I wish, but we'll save that for another dayî and with that, the guards drew their swords and surrounded Sam for arrest.
Several blows were exchanged however the Ranger was too quick and escaped down into the sewer where Nanoc and I followed him. As we ran through the sewer, with Mirith Guards at our heals we reached the second floor door but could not proceed any further as the door was locked. Sam kicked the door but it didn't budge, I cast a fire spell hoping to burn the door down but that also failed.
Like trapped rats in a cage there was nowhere else we could run and the Guards once again surrounded us seizing Sam and escorted him to the Mirith Jail.
By the time I arrived at the jail, Sam was already in custody and sharing a cell with Elwood who somehow got caught up with all the crazy chaos around Mirith. I was also surprised to see Alica standing infront of the prison. She must have made some kind of deal with the Mirith authorities because she said if Sam and Elwood could answer her riddles correctly she would set them free. Their fate was now in her hands and her first riddle was directed to Sam:
ìA man sat his horse in Mirith. He rode out of town on Wednesday. Two days later he returned on Wednesday. How is that possible?î
Taking only a minute to answer, Sam replied ì The man's horse was named Wednesdayî
ìExcellentît Alica replied and keeping her word she freed the Ranger.
Alica then turned to Elwood and proceeded to give him his riddle:
ìI wondered to Lerilin, on the Lerilin Bridge I met an old man. He carried a heavy load of wood. The wood was neither bent nor straight. What kind of wood was it?î
Taking a few moments, Elwood replied ìHard wood?î
ìAlas no, enjoy your time in prisonî she said before pausing for second îunless a friend can help you?î
Some chatter broke out between all of us, before Delimew replied ìsawdust?î.
ìYes!î she said as she unlocked the cell door and let Elwood out.
Not long after the two were released she asked that everyone behave themselves and bid us all farewell. |

The druid comes in The Gourmet's and waves at Bilann. She orders a lobster pie. While she waits for her sister to arrive, she asks, "Bilann, have you seen an armored riddler pass by here? She's an interesting one."
And the story goes like this...
Year 437 Sleeping Moon, Day 214
Near the long wall of rocks at the southwest part of Andris, Ikabi and I were visited by an interesting adventurer.
"Hello, I like to play the riddle game. Are either of you interested in a riddle?"
I do not recognize her voice. Even with her open helmet, I tried to see if she was someone I knew but she was not. "I am not really good at riddles. But pardon me, who are you?"
"A fellow adventurer. Name is Alica."
I kept hearing my sister's words in my head, Be wary of strangers. She seemed nice and harmless despite that she was carrying a unique sword and... and a blue plate breast! It was the first time I have seen it but I have heard about it from Amor during the Blue Moon Festival. Hayate bought an armor like that for 11 million gold pieces during the auction. I believe that was the highest bid in the festival's history!
"Good to meet you," I managed to say.
"The same here, friend."
After introducing ourselves, she asked us once again of our interest in guessing a riddle.
"Sure, but will it cost anything?" One can't be too careful, right?, I thought.
"No, it's free."
"Sure, but I tell you, I'm not really good at it."
"It's all good," said the blue-plated maiden reassuringly. "What's the most common thing found in a pocket?"
"Gold piece?" I guessed.
"Alas, no."
Hmm, I remember I dropped some gold coins the other day due to a hole in my pocket. It was my budget for dinner. "A hole?"
Ikabi seemed very lost in his thoughts and was deeply thinking of his answer. "Hand?" he said finally.
"Yes! That is correct!" Alica exclaimed with much enthusiasm. With that, she gave us tokens as prize. "Thank you for an enjoyable riddle game."
We exchanged our thanks and bid each other farewell.
A very interesting armored riddler, isn't she? Blue plate, unique sword, carries class tokens... who is she really?, I thought to myself. |

Vipetha write in her journal with joy. As she writes she remembers everything as if it was yesterday.
On year 483, 3rd day of the walking moon, Alica the Riddler shows up in Lerilin, as far as I know, being her first time. Our small group greeted her warmly, like usual. Dracilus bring on a bad first expression think Alica was a man, Alica still chose to riddle with them.
Her first riddle was for Dracilus, she said, "Forward I am heavy, backward I am not. What am I?" After a moment of pondering, Dracilus finally said he was stumped and gave a guess of the word "Heavy." Although wrong, Alica aprecated his close guess and rewarded him. She said, the answer was "the word 'Ton.'" Then continued, "Which is not backwards."
Then Alica had a riddle for Nylesse. The riddle went like this, "You have met two men, who look like twins. Both men were born the 12th day of the sleeping moon in the year 418. They have the same father and monther, admit they are brothers. Yet swear they are not twins. How is this possible?" Nylesse tried very hard to what she said as to "find a loophole." Nylesse then asked a few questions, sadly I cannot remember. Nylesse said she was afraid of taking too long. Finally, Nylesse admits she had no idea.
Instead of giving the answer, as I expected Alica to do, she asked if anyone else could guess. I realized I should have been thinking about it from the start. I pondered for a moment, thought for a bit. I realized that they aren't twins, so I said, "They're aren't twins if they are triplets." And to my surprise Alicia gave out a pleased "Correct!" Alica rewarded me with a token. I was happy because Alica has asked me any riddles, and I have never answered one correct before.
Alica asked Nylesse yet another riddle. "You see a man on a horse in Lerilin. He leaves on Wednesday. Two days later he came back on Wednesday. How is this possible?" Instantly I knew the answer for this riddle as will, but said nothing. "What's happening" I thought. "How come I know her riddles, when before i've always been stumped?" Nylesse, eventually got the answer and said, "Wednesday is his horse."
Some other events happened, that I have no care for, so I skip them.
Then I wanted to ask Alica a riddle, so I said, "Alica, how about a riddle from me?" Thinking I mean for her to ask me another riddle, she asked, "Have you won from me yet?" I said I did, still trying to tell her that I wanted to ask her a riddle. Alica said, "Alright I have a tricky one, are you up to it?" as if completely ignoring my request. I decided to go with it and said "sure." with very little enthusiasm. Her riddle went like this, "Galen, Bert and Michael are drinking mead. Estel, Maetera and Helen are drinking red wine. Their young friend Elizabethe joins them. Will she drink mead or red wine?" I was baffled, there was so much info not given, how would I know? So I thought out loud, and asked a few questions. I thought long and hard, "It has something to do with the names." I said to myself. I read and re-read over and over, what was it? Then I realized it was the names itself what decided who drank which drink. Being completely exhausted, I blurt out "She will drink red wine." Alica said' "Yes .. and why?" I continued with, "the letters in the names." Alica had an overjoyed sound to her "Excellent!" and I was as well. She said to everyone, "I believe that was the most difficult riddle I have asked a human!"
Although a few other things happened, this is what I chose to write about.
Vipetha closes her journal with joy, for she new she had made her comeback in the world of riddles. |
