A tall, graying druid in leathers sits alone at the Andris bank, arms wrapped around her knees, mostly hidden by the pillars. Taking another swig of sheep's milk, she plucks a few more bits of hay - the telltale reminders of a night spent in the stables - off of her arm. Her posture and expression are likely to warn off anyone who happens by, but she hopes no one will.

Apparently Lerilin is the only place - other than Marali, which I've hardly ever been to - where I'm really still welcome. Goddess knows I'll stay out of Mirith for a while. But I can't just stay around Lerilin; the creatures I need to get a little stronger and improve my skills just aren't around there. So Andris it is for now, I'll just have to try to avoid people and spend most of my time outside the walls.

She'd sent a private message to Mirrim the previous day, letting her know that Jedd had defected to the Mirith Vanguard, Ryen had been acting strangely of late and wasn't to be trusted until things are sorted out, and that she herself was stuck in Andris for a bit longer.

Tough to put all that on a youngling's shoulders, but Mirrim would just have to cope. Abernta was about somewhere and would usually show up when needed, and as far as I know both Ferrun and Phaedre - not CoF but extremely helpful with the youngsters nonetheless - are in the vicinity.

She was not precisely lonely, as the Rebels were often about and, taking their cue from the Lady Fuoco, they were always kind to her and would hunt with her. Nevertheless, she felt alone.

Jedd is now gone, Patarius hadn't been seen in years and was presumed dead, Bremden has disappeared again after a brief return, and the others have long been lost. I am the only one left, and despite frequent explanations that the Circle is really a democracy, it seems to me that in the eyes of many I AM the Circle. How often recently have people spoken to me of "my" guild, with the telling inflection that meant more than "the guild you're a member of."

And I'm not doing a very good job of representing the Circle. Mirith is annoyed at best, Andris has made it clear I'm a bit less than welcome, and most people seem to just ignore me. Where did I go wrong? Of course Palmer and the Lerilin guard still seem to think Mirrim and I walk on water, but I suspect that's largely because much of the responsibility of taking care of the youngsters is now off of their shoulders.

She sighed and rubbed her forehead, making little impact on the frown lines that were lately becoming a permanent fixture on her face.

I started this because I wanted to help the youngsters, and we're still doing that. No matter what anyone says, we're still doing that. I must hang on to that, to the purpose that's driven me for years. I succeeded at that, and we're still succeeding at that. Nothing else, not the politics nor the changing faces, really matters. We are helping the youngsters.

As a line of sunlight began to creep towards her across the steps of the bank, she stood up and stretched.

Still no one about except the guards, which is good. Another day in the killing fields. I hope Artos and I both see the end of it alive.

The leather-clad druid greets the guards pleasantly, then stretches, catlike in the rising sun, while standing at the entrance to the hall. Surveying the lush green land and healthy trees around the hall, she is once again wearing a smile.

It might take longer here, but I feel so much better. I feel respected and accepted, and I do so enjoy helping the young ones. Goddess knows I've never been one to do things the easy way, anyway. I hope our quiet, peaceful little town can stay out of all the turmoil and strife I see everywhere else, but if it comes here I will fight. I'll protect Lerilin and this guild to my last breath.

A grin crosses her face as she remembers the puzzlement and curiosity she has seen on many faces recently while training at the local cemetery.

Most of them are too polite to ask, but they can't figure what I'm doing with an earth elemental or a sludgie. They know they've seen me with a black bear or tusker. Oh well, if they won't ask they'll just have to stay puzzled.

It looks like Bert's been by and topped off the leathers, which is a blessing. With Jedd gone I'd better keep a closer eye on the plate chests. We're overflowing with robes of protection and the potions are stocked. All good. Better check the armor while I'm thinking about it...

She moves off to inspect the chests full of plate armor, weapons, and shields which are given out to the youngsters.

Heike is once again at the "Rebels' Corner" of Andris bank, but appears considerably more relaxed than she has in recent months. She pulls out an old journal in which she keeps notes of things she wants to remember, and begins to write:

Out of 6 bears:

1 and 3 could catch harpies but not trolls. Average hits on brackens and giants.
2 hopeless, kept running off and not responsive to commands.
4 and 6 strong and fast; caught harpies and trolls, strong hits on brackens and giants.
5 caught harpies but not trolls, strong hits.

They are not all the same!

Pixie will eat apples, bananas, bread, apple & banana pies, mandrake cookies, gingerbread, candy, candied apples, bread, chocolate. Forgot to try garlic bread. Will not eat mushrooms or any meat or fish.

Pet pixies sometimes call wild pixies if frightened or upset, will kill when they defy. Are they even worth having?

Heard the trumpets when Max had a bone mage at 1/2 health, not on the kill. Also his strength did not increase until some time later. Must tell them all I can find, it is not only the kill which is important.

Re-reading her notes several times, she decides they are clear enough to remind her of the facts she wants to remember and puts away the book.

After seeking Mayor Palmer in the village and informing the temple cleric, guards, and the greeter that she wished to speak to him, he fortuitously entered the Armor Barn while Heike was making and selling leather armor to the shop.

As she suspected, the Mayor was well aware of the troubles surrounding Mirith and recent events around the lands. As part of Lerilin, the Circle of Friends wishes to follow the guidance and recommendations of the Mayor in such matters, so she asked Palmer for his thoughts regarding these events. Alone in the guild hall after the conversation, she muses privately.

Palmer apparently has some history with the Black Hand, and did say we should aid Mirith if it is threatened by them. On the other hand, he indicated that he wishes Lerilin to remain uninvolved in any squabbles between cities. I can extrapolate non-involvement in the military activities of Mirith - and Marali - especially if I factor in what he said about Lerilin's military resources. Yes, I think that's the way to play it. If they attack the city outright, we'll have to help - or at least look like we're trying to help - but failing that we can 'officially' stay out of it. Yes. I don't trust Beleth and his black magic, I don't trust Nafets, and most of all I don't trust that crazy senile old king, and I really want to stay out of it and allow my friends to stay out of it too, if they wish.

Her path decided, Heike leaves a note in the Guild Hall for her fellow members that reads:

Dear Friends:

You've no doubt heard that Mirith is asking for help with some tasks or missions they are undertaking. Unless you want to get together and outvote me, I'm not going to officially bend CoF to the tasks.

Each of you may, of course, do as you wish, but if it's up to me there won't be any official CoF contingent to participate in these tasks. I'm not convinced they know what they're doing, and I'm not sure they're even telling us exactly what they are really up to, and I think we should stay out of it, at least officially.

Of course, if this "Black Hand" or any other criminal groups attack any of the cities proper, any guild members who hear of it should go to help defend the cities. Protecting innocent citizens and shopkeepers is a whole different thing than these intrigues and secret missions and so forth.

Hoping you are all well and agree,
Heike

Hours after the mission to free Vaup and recover a gem, Heike the druid slumps wearily on the steps of Lerilin's bank, obviously lost in her own thoughts.

Well, at least I can freely go back to Mirith now if I wish. Pernell was bit curt with his "they were just doing their jobs," but he did agree that "we're okay." Maybe I just blew the whole thing way out of proportion in my own mind, and Mirith never cared a thing about me one way or the other. Huh. You silly druid, probably everyone but you completely forgot about the whole thing, or never even knew of it in the first place. That thing with Lomatt, though - even with what happened later, they won't be forgetting that so quickly.

This Lomatt - what is he? What is his purpose? First he appears in Lerilin wanting to tear down the walls, then he and his "friends" invade Mirith. He claims to want peace and an end to fear, but what is the real agenda? Were we being tested to see how many beasts it would take to overrun Mirith? Was the whole thing a convoluted plan to insert a spy into the ranks? Were Bella and I killed deliberately in order to cause me to tame one of Lomatt's "friends," and if so did I do exactly what he wanted me to do, naively falling right into his trap, and cause the later troubles that beset the Black Hand mission? I don't know, and I don't know who I could even safely talk to about such things.

Finally I could no longer stand the circles my tortured thoughts were running in, and tried to turn my attention to more normal things. Later on a young druid appeared in Lerilin, and helping her for a while did much to take my mind off of these unpleasant musings.
