Post subject: how to use portals?

I've read all the directions I can find, go to a portal with my crystal and drop it, and nothing happens. My keen intellect is telling me I'm missing an important detail or two... Do you have to be a certain level to use them? Or need more than just colored crystals? Maybe take your boots off before hand? Any help much appreciated.

| You need to gather 50 crystals of 1 color and give them to a NPC and you will get a pure crystal of that color, then you can drop the pure at a portal to be sent somewhere else. |

OK, it's not working. I'm trying to give 50 green crystals to NPC (non-playing characters right? i.e. townspeople??) but I just go pick up the same 50 crystals. No pure green crystal. What am I doing wrong?

| LOL you have to go to certain ones. You have to go to a city, give the crystals to the npc at the temple and they will give you the pure. The npc at the lerilin temple does not give you pures. |
