I pulled out a recent letter from my Cleric sister Sobiya, which I had folded up in one of the pouches that lined my robe.I spread it out on the table in front of me, and scanned through the many paragraphs within, which were of no interest to me, but one piece of news that grabbed my attention: The Red School of Magic.
Taking a sip of my drink, I relaxed back into my chair as I began a letter to the Red Wizard.
Dear Cassandra
I'm excited to hear that there is now an actual school for Wizards and I would be honoured if I could be considered as a possible future student of your Red School of Magic.
I remember too well, the hours I spent learning each incantation and practicing my wizard spells on the resident ant population in Lerilin. I wish i could have begun my training at that young age, but I couldn't even find a beginners class I could sneak into back then.
On our recent hunting trip to Aborek I once again got to witness the amazing abilities and strength of wizard's who are experts in the art of magic. I tried to take some notes on your hunting techniques but in between the Bol Flas' and Shel Rel Bol's I misplaced my notepad. I decided it would be a much better idea if I put in an application of enrolment then trying to read my scribbled handwriting after each hunt with talented wizards.
I hope to hear from you soon as being a Wizard is my passion and hopefully i can be a great one some day.
Signed
Sher. |

The wizard grinned and folded the letter again. She liked Sher. From all the wizards she had met in recent trips to Lerilin, she had been the one catching her attention. She certainly is stronger than she thinks.
"Dear Sher,
I am honoured that you want to join the School. I was quite impressed with your magic skills both in Aborek and in that trip to the Volcano the day we met. I dare say that you are more than ready to enrol directly in the third module of our programme (if you think you can bear dealing with me, that is).
In case you feel that your magic resistance is still not adequate to studying in Marali, you might also be interested in spending some time in Andris. But you strike me as someone to whom fast pace and, let's call it, almost suicidal adventures might have a great appeal.
Or maybe you could do a bit of both, depending on your time and availability. Sometimes, very good wizards are not as skilled in different contexts, and there will be no problem if you think there's an area where you want to work on in more detail. Let's talk about it when we meet next time.
As you might know, the School is not officially open yet, so we have some time to go through the programme and to discuss what would be best for you at this point.
Say hello to Macelitte for me!
Yours,
C." |

They are going to chant some nonsense, and he will be fine. He has to be fine.
Nafets' suggestion that Beleth would recover his magic skills with the help of a prayer made her think of it again. The Red School. She hadn't manage to find a teacher for the first grade. I guess I'll have to cover it until there's someone.
However, finding Beleth in the Tower had filled her with inspiration. After all, they had witnessed a spell being used for the first time. They had watched a black mage stop consumption, in an experiment that was as dangerous for its patient as for its audience.
And the towerÖ Why not? She sat on the bank steps and started a letter.
"Dear Senator Morgans,
I do not know if the Tower of Nystral is under the jurisdiction of Andris, but I would assume so. Perhaps it has reached your ears that Mirith Royal Mage, Sir Beleth, has discovered a hidden level where, he told us, the pupils of the founder of your beautiful city used to train.
As it happens, I have been working on opening a school for wizards. It will be called the Red School of Magic, and should open its doors very soon. Of course, the school will not be affiliated with any specific town; rather, I hope it to have itinerant classes all over the world. However, the name would justify an opening session around Andris, also because I have convinced the wizard Fuoco, that you know so well, to join me in this adventure.
I am writing to ask whether I would have the Senate's permission to hold an inaugural lecture of our school in the newfound floor, as a homage to the school of Nystral, who served as inspiration to our own.
Let me know if that would be inconvenient, or if Andris would accept to give us that honour.
Cordially,
Cassandra, wizard of the Mirith Vanguard"
That prayer better work. It only makes sense that Beleth would be our main speaker. |

Dear Cassandra,
I was delighted to hear that my sister Rebel Marquisen has also volunteered to be a teacher in our forthcoming venture.
You know your old vanguard comrade - the Toxic Twins as we were then known! - and how inclined she is to doubting her powers and abilities. These moments of doubt have at times reflected in my sleep and some strange dreams that have startled me into a sitting position, candle on and a terrible sense of helpnesses, mouth dry and shadows dancing on the wall, like pixies and goblins mocking me.
In one dream, I saw myself outside Nystral's Tower - I was supposed to be lecturing my pupils on the effectiveness of some spells but I was holding a mining axe in my hand instead and was talking utter nonsense. In another, I tried to trap a giant in the stable to use him for some future experiments with my class but something went horribly wrong...
I hope for your sake and mine that I can live up to expectations!
With affection,
Fuoco
(OOC: Nystral's Tower does fall under Andris jurisdiction - one of the Sand Golem hosts addresses visitors as 'friends of Andris'). |

Dancing Moon, Andris
Dear Cassandra,
In order not to be rusty when the time comes, I took it upon myself to start practising on the subject of wizard interaction with other classes, and found a willing and bright pupil in the shape of my very dear old friend, the lovely ranger Jozlyn.
I gave her a manual with the necessary instructions, accurately marked her route and the lesson had excellent results, culminating in a shower of arrows and bolts (and a pocketful of gold, shiny eggs and multi coloured crystals). The little accident which followed, sharks attracted by the presence of blood (thank Goddess not ours), can be easily brushed under the carpet.
I trust you are recovering from your ailment and remain,
Affectionately yours,
Fuoco |

Varto quietly walks up to the Mirith Vanguard and leaves a letter for Cassandra by the door
Cassandra,
These past months I have lost my faith. I no longer believe in a world of black and white, right and wrong. Tirana has evoked feelings of hate which I have never felt to such an extent before. In the past I have used my magical abilities to channel healing forces, but now I am starting to lose focus when I heal. It is harder and harder to maintain my focus for long durations. Thoughts creep in, strange thoughts. Thoughts of using my magic to inflict harm on enemy creatures. I have begun researching how to use the offensive arts. I found an ancient tome in the woods while on a walk. I think that it is fate that the tome contains many spells to attack or defend others. I have to admit the power I feel when I read about the spells can be overwhelming, however I think my time as a cleric shows that I am of good enough character to learn such power. I know that dabbling in the offensive arts will require me to renounce my clerical vows. I can deal with that decision.
I am seeking your help to figure out the book of spells I found. My early attempts at casting magic arrow have resulted in nothing. I say the words, * bur *, but nothing happens. I see no results, I feel nothing. I need help changing my thought process from that of a cleric to that of a wizard. I would like to enroll in your school, I realize that I am not the ideal pupil, and will probably not succeed. However, this is the direction I want to go in. If I fail in my studies I can always depend on magical rings to give me the power I desire. If you could keep our lessons private I would appreciate it. I would rather that word did not get out about my situation just yet.
Thanks for your time,
Varto |

So many things had happened since she last opened her wooden box with the papers on the Red School. Mirith taken, Beleth gone to look for N'eroth, a change in the Senate, balls, diplomatic missions, meetings with the DiabolicalsÖ With solicitations coming from all sides, it was hard to focus on one single task. The School had necessarily been neglected, once again. She would probably have to write to the Senate again, in case her first letter had been lost.
Nonetheless, she had kept an eye out for promising wizards she would run into. She had not seen many wizards at allÖ Off the top of her head, she could count three new acquaintances. A very young one at the Blue Moon festival, then some other running from Andris to Lerilin through the Crescent IslandÖ The most interesting encounter had probably been with that older one, who certainly did not need to be schooled. She had heard of him, long ago, but it was the first time she had had the pleasure of being introduced. There was something appealing in his apparent quietness, bordering on resignation, that made her curious about his life and character. Without knowing exactly how, she had persuaded him to write a record of the events he had witnessed that day. Perhaps she could persuade him to give her a hand with the School. But he doesn't strike me as the teaching sort. Maybe as a researcherÖ
As usual, it was a letter that brought her back to her project. Varto's missive, requesting her help in a change of profession. She read the cleric's handwriting with amused concern. She had always liked to tease clerics about their choice, luring them to the word of wizardry with charming words and promises of great satisfaction. It was the first time a cleric addressed her with such a serious request. She sat at the long table and wrote a short reply, to be delivered as discreetly as possible. He had lost faith. She never had any, yet, she was somehow worried that the cleric would regret his decision.
"Dear Varto,
I would be more than happy to help you with your quest for knowledge in other areas of magic. I cannot promise you success, but I can promise you, at least, theoretical understanding, as well as a solid technique. In the end, it may very well be a matter of vocation, though I tend to believe it is not a path closed to anyone wanting to follow it.
We can have private lessons around the Mirith Vanguard, if you wish. The hall has been quiet lately, and no one should disturb us in the backyard.
Yours,
C." |
