So an alternate to AIM is a function where players can communicate through actually talking. Not quite vid talking, we can't see each other, but we can hear each other's voices. It can be useful in situations where the cleric needs the figs to drink potions, and setups such as these are commonly used in other games. jinker is now hosting an obie ventrilo (one of these online-talk services) server, and people are welcome to join. I can give you the link and basic procedure, although jinker may-or-may-not give more details and/or answer questions as needed, i'm not particularly computer literate ha.
Basic procedure is... Click on this link, first off:
http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php
Then, click on the one that suits your computer, most likely mac OSX 10.4 or higher but you may have an older computer.
Download the client on to your computer, click on the client and set it up. If you want afterwards you can look at the online walkthrough or whatever it is, but that's up to you. In any case, once you're in, create a new username for yourself. After that is done, in the 'server' bar, type in 'jink.homeip.net' in to it, you may have to do it twice because you have to click on new first i think, not entirely sure.
After that you should be able to connect. Some people have problems receiving and giving messages, which can usually be fixed in the setup. You may have to ask jinker about any of those problems if you have it.
It's been reset so there can be up to 20 people in the ventrilo server at a time, we're not sure if this lags Oberin or not seeing as it's on the same server but that's partly what we're testing. As long as a room has people in it they'll hear you. Most stay either in the lobby or the other rooms. Tbh it's just who you want to talk to ha.
Anyway I just finished my first hunt with it, it was very interesting, to say the least. A bit disorienting and confusing, not to mention surprising, at times, but in general a pretty fun experience.
Anyway, for those who decide to join... Have fun! |

the way i understand it (may be wrong):
in the server menu you hit new, then type oberin or whatever else you want. i don't think it means anything, it's just what it shows up as under the menus.
then, under the 'hostname or IP' bit you type 'jink.homeip.net'.
leave the other 3 fields as is, and this should work fine. i think |

| Yeah there aren't a lot of people on it atm. Leiland, phinn, myself, skaggz, jinks, narasa, modlin... I've seen a couple others like octar but they've had trouble with it. Otherwise I haven't really seen a lot of others on it so far. I'm hoping to make it a bit bigger. Doesn;t have to be as big as AIM, per se, but a server where 10 people or so in it at most times being normal sounds like an interesting goal. |

| I am able to login but it seems I have problems with the speakers and microphone (both built-in and USB). I could not make the USB headset work properly. On the other hand, while using built-in, I am not sure what Leiland said when I logged in. I could not hear properly but I think what Leiland said was that my voice could not be heard and that there were noises at the background when I try to speak? Still I am not sure what could be the problem with my mac and am trying to find other headsets that might work. |

if you go into system prefs -> sound, you'll get a list of input and output devices that are connected. try playing around with them to see if that helps.
also, the input one has bars that light up when it detects noise. so you can use that to see if your mic is working.
also, feel free to make me a sandwich. |

| Before I attempt to use this... Do I need a mic or can I be a creeper and just listen? Well, I don't have a mic.. |

that was a great experience...
I do wish the communications didn't overlap, over. It can get jumbled when too many people talk at once and, understandably, there is a lag between speaking and being heard. Otherwise a cool experience. Priceless and memorable quotes already, under the deadly Fighting Moon.
(edited in: You have to press down on the control button to speak(?). That kinda messes with changing the direction you are facing in Oberin... is there another way?) |

Thanks Ariki... now that seems like a no brainer. So here's another question for you technical geniuses:
Is there a way to make it so that speaker output is disabled when the input is activated?
This would allow me to blare my music... or least avoid vocal echos without resorting to headphones.
Oh and on a side tanget, concerning use of Ventrilo in Oberin... It was very interesting to hear accents and also how people interpret the pronunciation of Oberin related things... like Marali for example... |
