As I was making potions in The Poisoned Bottle, a man named Lomatt came in and began a very strange conversation. He perceived Lerilin, surrounded by sturdy stone walls, to be as a cage. When I explained that the walls are there to protect us, he said that it was quite the opposite where he came from and seemed puzzled by our fear of the beasts outside town, and said he thought that the beasts fear us.
I was a bit surprised, as it seems that nothing fears me until it is nearly dead, and even then some creatures have not enough fear to run. He suggested we tear down the walls and let the beasts in! I suggested (a bit tongue in cheek, I admit) that he seek out Mayor Palmer and propose his idea.
I told him that, as a druid, I was more inclined to befriend the beasts than most, and cast a lesser shapeshift to show him that I could even become as the beasts. He said, oddly enough, that that happened to him quite often and apparently became a pixie. Of course, one of the guards then immediately began to attack the pixie. I followed them but lost the pixie and couldn't find Lomatt, but then he returned near the potions shop and seemed to be all right.
He seemed to be new to Oberin, so I offered him supplies and aid, but he said that he'd overstayed his welcome and was provided for by the forest. He then seemed to become a pixie again and flew off into the forest after wishing me good luck.
Was this a man able to become a pixie, or a pixie able to become a man? If the latter, what could be his(her?) purpose for coming into town and conversing with a human? Could it be the beginnings of a possible overture of peace, or investigations preceding an attack or invasion? Only time will tell, but if you see Lomatt, be wary of how you speak to him, especially as regards pixies!

The druid's interests pike as he silently reads the report. Then, he reads it again and begins to muse.
Lerilin without walls. Yes, yes I believe that could work.
He remembered fondly his first days in lerilin, how he used to train and would not leave until he deemed himself worthy. Come to think of it though, it always did seem as though the walls of lerilin were higher than the walls of the other major cities with the possible exception of Andris. Or was that just him?
I might just raise the thought with the Mayor the next time I see him.
He walked away in a pleasant daydream.
Lerilin, without walls... Wouldn't that be interesting? I wonder who else would like to see the city back to its old state? |

As Arduis was resting in Andris after keeping the Giants outside the city at bay, he had his ususal mug of Ale followed by some Hayates Sake. After a while, in a quite boozed but peaceful state of mind, he noticed two travelers who just approached the city gates.
As he remembered one of them, a farmer who had his estate close to Lerilin, his home town, he greeted them. The farmer also remembered Arduis from his long stay at Lerilin and as a former member of the Lerilin Vanguard so replied the greeting. Pretty soon, after an offer from Arduis to have a drink with him after their long journey from Lerilin, they were engaging in a long exchange of the latest news. Besides the usual everyday affairs, the bad cropping season, the dying and birthing of new inhabitants to Lerilin, the farmer suddenly aroused Arduis interest. The arrival of a shapeshifter who turns into a Pixie and proposes to tear down Lerilins city defence! Combined with the approval of other free adventurers Arduis was more than alarmed.
Remembering a very unpleasant ant invasion, the uprising of water and air elementals near lerilins coast and the nearby cemetery who was visited more than once by Liches, he felt his anger rise. How stupid can people be? It took a long time, effort and great expanses to set up that formidable wall to protect the city and its inhabitants from the nearby beasts. The idea of proposing the tear-down of the city walls to Mayor Palmer seemed instantly like a betrayal of a traitor to him. His anger anger nearly rose into a full outrage of aggression, but he calmed himself down and started thinking what to do to counter such idiotic ideas.
Arduis left the two travellers after a short farewell and headed for his quarters at the local Inn. He quickly grabbed his travelling equipment, made sure everything was set and fine and made his way towards Lerilin.
His intention was to get an audience with Mayor Palmer and try to convince him, that such ideas would be disatrious to his home town. He was sure, the Mayor would agree with him, since he remembered him as a very intelligent and wise ruler of the Free City of Lerilin. |

After some undeservedly gentle cajoling from her patient friends, Heike decides to journey to Mirith and speak to Cassandra in person. The way down was uneventful, and although she eyed the guards warily as she passed them, they let her through the gate without comment.
There were many people at the bank, as something was to be taking place a bit later. I found Cassandra and asked her a few questions, but there were many people around and I didn't consider it fair to ask her to go off alone as others were also wanting to speak with her. After learning that the "task" was not to begin until some time later, I decided to hit the gooey park with my relatively new Tusker, Bella.
The Tusker was pretty good at killing gooeys, but the brown bears were more of a problem, and as I was distracted thinking about the upcoming "mission" and other concerns, I quickly became frustrated and decided to go make potions or something.
As Bella and I approached the stable, I was suddenly hit by a lightning bolt! I barely had time to notice that the Mirith stable was full of bracken, pixies, and black bears before I had been disoriented, paralyzed, and then teleported into the unfriendly claws of several black bears. In spite of all the potions I had on me, I couldn't drink fast enough to stay alive. I passed to the grey and watched in helpless anguish as the bears turned on poor Bella and quickly killed her. Not wanting to lose some of the items I had in my pack, I waited on my corpse thinking someone would have heard the commotion and come to see what was going on, but it was not to be.
I ghosted my way around to the front of the bank, knowing that I would be looted but hoping to recover my possessions after the beasts were killed. When I reached the bank steps, I had time to note that Lomatt was there talking to people before I was resurrected, and immediately discerned the cause of my demise. "LOMATT!" I shouted as soon as I was able to speak, "Your FRIENDS just killed me and my pet!" As he was sputtering some apology, I turned to the others and informed them that the stable was overrun with pixies, black bears, and bracken. The group hastened around to see for themselves (and presumably help me get my stuff back) with Lomatt in the lead fussing about his "friends" and myself hanging to the back, as I was clad only in my death robe and had no reagents.
I lost track of some of the people as I was doing my best to avoid the notice of the pixies and bears, but I did see Lomatt calming and taming several bears, although the bracken continued to fire their lightning bolts and the pixies continued with their usual patter about the forest hating us and that we big nasty things should die, all the while paralyzing, teleporting, and disorienting people.
Eventually I was able to make my way around to my body, which was behind the potion shop, and collect what was left of my things. Predictably, the fine leather armor which my friend Abernta had made for me, my glaive of power, all the gold I'd looted from gooeys, and my protection rings were gone. As I headed back to the stable, it occurred to me that Lomatt had added insult to injury - by taming the creatures who had looted me, he prevented me from recovering my belongings!
As I neared the stable I saw a black bear chasing Jedd, and quickly intervened to tame it, then joined the fray. Eventually all of the beasts were either tamed by Lomatt and sent off, or dispatched by the group, leaving us with Lomatt.
By this time I was quite angry, and could I have attacked Lomatt in that moment, I probably would have. A fairly lengthy discussion ensued, which I took little part in other than to complain loudly about my lost possessions and declare that Lomatt should not be trusted. As they hadn't died or lost valuable items, most of the group were considerably more charitable than I was feeling at the time, and there was discussion about getting together with Lomatt's "friends" at some other time and place, such as out in the forest on their turf. Perhaps others can flesh out the details of all they spoke of; I was distracted and paid little attention.
Finally Lomatt became a pixie and left, and the group returned to the bank to discuss what had happened. I was fairly vocal about several things, one of which was that Lomatt is not human, and another being that Lomatt's "friends" are more like his army and that they had invaded Mirith already. Several people wondered how Lomatt and all the beasts had gotten past the guards, and someone (I don't remember who) said that they would have a talk with the guard commander about their apparent shirking of their duties.
At some point during the aftermath, it occurred to me that the bear I had tamed was one of Lomatt's friends, and I became a bit uneasy about it, especially since Lomatt had at one point stated that he "spent too much time as a bear." Upon inspecting the bear, I found a strange note attached to a leg that said something about the bear being guarded, and then the creature smiled at me! Having had many bears and knowing that smiling is not something they generally do much, I was rather unnerved and decided to release the bear.
Now, looking back on what happened later, I must wonder whether that cursed bear was the "spy" who was spoken of that ruined our plans, and I feel quite stupid and guilty that I did not rid myself of the beast sooner. True, he fought for me against Lomatt's friends when I asked him to, destroying several of the bracken that infested the stable, but that could have been a ploy to win my trust. I don't know. No one ever said who the spy was. I hope it wasn't the bear, but I can't be sure.
After the later events, exhausted, uneasy, and unsure of myself, I beat feet home to Lerilin to figuratively lick my wounds and try to think things through.
I can not remember everyone who was there, and I sincerely apologize for that; I think dying can affect one's memory.

After his arrival from Andris Arduis asked in the local Inn for his usual romm, and since vacation time was over, it was available. So he dragged himself and his gear up on the first floor, unclothed and went into the already prepared hot bath tube. And again as so often he wondered, how fast the Inn keeper had the bath prepared, while he was still downstairs asking for the room. A mystery to be solved at another time.
As he was relaxing in the hot perfumed water, (how in the world of The Goddess could they afford perfumed bath water in this little fishing town?), he heard some comotion from the basement. Alarmed by the recent rumours, Arduis quickly grabbed his Club of Power, a weapon he inherited by an old and venerable Giant, and stormed only clothed in a towl down the stairs.
At first he saw just some people grouped around a bundle, which proved to be a feared and shaken peasant. As some of the by-standers remembered Arduis as a former member of the Lerilin Vanguard, they made way for him.
Arduis didnt care about the puzzled looks of the cititzens as they realized his rather sportive clothing and asked the young woman what happened. She told him, that she was from Mirith, where just recently the town was invaded by all kinds of fearsome wild beasts and malevolant trees which attacked and killed people. The "audience" seemed at half: some simply laughed about such stupid stories of a Ginseng smoker and some were concerned about the possibility of such an invasion. If a large city like Mirith was attacked and barely held their ground, what could happen, if the same occured to Lerilin?
Arduis believed the young women despite her dirt and ragged apperance, since he knew how tasking it could be to travel long distances by foot. He asked the Inn keeper for a fine room for the young women to stay, prepare her a decent meal and give her all the accomodies the nn had to offer. She first rejected that, but after Arduis assured her in front of the citizens, that he would take care of the bill and any further expenses she would have to return to Mirith if she wished so, or give her some assistance to start living in Lerilin if she wished so, she finally agreed into the offer. Her looks were a bit concerned, but Arduis de Gispard assured her also, that he dint want anything in return, since his former oath to the Vanguard was still within him, although he wasnt a memeber anymore. That easened the women, since she clearly relaxed and the Inn keeper showed her the room he had prepared for her.
Arduis returned to his own room and sunk himself deep into the still hot water to start thinking:
How could he approach the Mayor, a man who was surely heavily burdened b the everyday duties of his role? And if granted an audience, something he feared would not happen, how should he convince the Mayor, that danger might be imminent to the people of the city, since the only "incident" was at Mirith? And his "employment" as a travelling adventurer surely wouldnt help in that matter either.
Arduis thoughts were still circling around these matters, when he went to bed to get some sleep, troubled by the worries for his home town. |
