How had it come to this? It had been Casden's voice that prevailed in the end, against the counsels of Rengal and Nafets. "Mirith must show strength, and show that our King's life is sacred." A famed executioner had been hired, a brutal Maralian, skilled in the arts of torture and a master of the Thousand Cuts. Vechiatolli's principles were to be observed: 'A slight injury may be avenged, therefore the ruler must either crush his enemy utterly or treat him with kindness'. Farookh and the Foehan Underground were to be crushed. Tigg reluctantly gave the order to execute them all. "Do we have evidence against Abadonna?" Enquired a skeptical Lord Rengal. "Evidence enough" countered Casden "he is the man Sumac's brother, and has been seen plotting with Farookh in jail." Lord Rengal's brow darkened, but Tigg's word was final. "I don't like this any more than you do, but I don't see that we have a choice."

A farce. And Mirith a laughing stock.

Ciddia Tigg banged her fist on the table. "Why did you let him out Nafets? Whatever possessed you?"
The old cleric raised a quizzical eyebrow. "Is His Majesty a prisoner now too?"
"Don't take me for a fool" the Vicereine raged, "you know very well what you did".

Nafets opened his mouth to reply, but no words escaped his lips. His eyes widened, then filled with tears. But they were no longer looking at Tigg. Slowly, she turned around to see the same horror that had struck the cleric dumb. Her hand instinctively reached for the hilt of her sword as she whispered "Beleth?".
